Joseph “J.D.” Matt, 87 of Nederland, Texas passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Oak Grove Nursing Home in Groves, Texas. J.D. was born in Eunice, Louisiana on May 9, 1934 to the late, Edmund Matt and Doris Fontenot Matt.
J.D. served his community in many rolls during his working years. He retired from the Texaco Refinery after 31 years of service. He then went on to serve 8 years and retire from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. J.D. also served as a substitute teacher with the Nederland Independent School District at C.O. Wilson Middle School. J.D. was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and enjoyed spending time on the golf course in his spare time.
J.D. is preceded in death by his parents, Edmund Matt and Doris Fontenot Matt; and his two sisters, Ruth Gwymes and Melina Manning.
Those left to cherish J.D.’s memory include his loving wife of 45 years, Debbie Matt of Nederland; sons, Ricky Matt and his wife, Susan of New Braunfels, Texas, Micky Matt and his wife, Regie of Beaumont, Texas and Nicky Matt and his wife, Lori of Nederland; daughters, Sonya Wagner and her husband, Rodney of Rifle, Colorado and Rebecca Bertrand and her husband, Ryan of Nederland; grandchildren, Megan, Jerrod, Ross, Chase, Morgan, Lindsay, Logan, Lauren, Caleb, Carly, Tyler, Alyssa and Kyler; and many great-grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland on Monday evening, November 29, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Nederland on Tuesday morning, November 30, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with Father John Hughes, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County.
