Joy G. Holmes was born in Woodville, TX in 1924 to the union of Gail and Gordia Broom. She will be remembered by her children, William (Bud) Holmes, Jr.; Mary Allison; LaNell DuBose and husband, Kent; Ira and wife Dena Holmes; and son-in-law Kenny Firmin as a devoted and loving mother. She is also survived by one sister, Edith Carlton of Longview; 13 adored grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Each holds dear their own special memories. Her husband, William A. Holmes, daughter, Arlene Firmin; her parents; sister, Berdell McAlister of Woodville; and brother, Harry Broom of Hull-Daisetta preceded her in death. Mrs. Holmes was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and retired from the Port Arthur Independent School District. Visitation will be held at Levingston Funeral Home, 5601 39th Street, in Groves from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon on Saturday, September 18, 2010. An intimate family service will be held at Woodville Magnolia Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. following visitation. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Our final expression of gratitude goes to Sabine Oaks' staff and residents and to the nurses with Odyssey Hospice for the tender comfort and care given to our mother and family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, 4011 Memorial Blvd., Port Arthur, TX 77640-2636 or a charity of your choice.
