Kenneth Einkauf

1941 ∼ 2024

Kenneth Elwyn Einkauf, of Port Neches, died on June 1 at the age of 82. In his boyhood hometown of El Campo, Kenneth enjoyed playing tennis and working on the family farm. Family, tennis, and farming defined much of the rest of his life.

At Lamar College, he indulged his passion for tennis as well as his passion for Rosie Hilgemeier (marrying her in 1964). Upon graduating with his teaching degree, he took a job at Port Neches-Groves High School where he remained for his entire career. He furthered his education and received a Master’s Degree in Education from McNeese University. He began teaching civics and coaching tennis, and he passed along to countless students his love for the game (he was probably less successful with civics). With characteristic dedication and attention to detail, he even set up a stringing machine in his home and on his own time strung rackets for all his team members and numerous community players. During those years, he and Rosie also raised two fine tennis players of their own. Eventually he traded his racket for a huge ring of keys as the Director of Student Activities. In that position he cheerfully and conscientiously supervised—sometimes from before daybreak to after midnight—the multitude of extracurricular activities that are an important part of high school life.

When their busy schedules permitted, the entire family would head to the farm in Hallettsville, where Kenneth loved to drive the tractor, build fences, and tend to the cows. Following retirement, virtually the only thing that kept him away from the farm were his grandkids and great-grandchild; he thought nothing of making the 400-plus mile round trip to catch one of them in a baseball game, a football game, a dance recital, or a graduation. And even after health problems prevented him from making the long drive himself, he and Rosie still managed to occasionally gather in Hallettsville with family and friends.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosie, his children, Selena and husband Russell Rowe, and Kyle and wife Tammy Einkauf, his grandchildren, Alex Rowe, Kylie Einkauf and Fiancée Jacob Sanford, Hunter Einkauf and Fiancée Rawan Moussa, Fischer Einkauf, and Katarina Einkauf, and his great-granddaughter, Camilla Einkauf. Services will be held on June 5th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The American Heart Association.

We would like to thank Mid-Jefferson Extended Care Hospital for the outstanding care they gave and compassion they showed to Kenneth and our family.

When I think of my cousin, Kenneth, I have nothing but fond memories. Always positive, always compassionate always putting others before himself. He had a quick wit and a love for people. He was raised on a farm, so he was no stranger to hard work and perseverance. I am so proud of the wonderful man and leader he was. I know that Kenneth is reuniting with his wonderful parents, Alvin and Libertha, and his brother, Donnie. Most importantly, he finally gets to see Jesus face to face, the very One that Kenneth dedicated his life for! He will no doubt hear the words that we all long to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant, enter into your rest…”.

What a wonderful man to know and work with. Ken touched the lives, in a positive way , of thousands of students and educators as the Director of Student Activities at PNG. I am sadden to know Ken has passed away but I know he will be just fine where he is going . When I think of him I remember he always had different colored pens in his top pocket and directing all us on what we needed do to take care of students . He used to love to talk about his farm and I would talk to him about the Hill Country . Wow, what a great person!

Many fond memories of working on flats and sets for Act 1 Scene 1 Theatre Company; hauling items back and forth from venues to storage, and visiting the farm. Kenneth had a heart of gold and will be missed deeply. God's blessings to all.

In the summer of 1971, just before entering high school, I was whacking a tennis ball against the wall at the PNG courts in an attempt to teach myself tennis. Coach Einkauf approached, generously offered instruction, and invited me to try out for the team. Little did I know it was the start of a wonderful lifelong friendship both on and off the courts with him, Rosie, and the entire Einkauf-Hilgemeier family. Oddly, despite our fifty-plus year relationship, I never graduated beyond calling him “Coach” (Kenneth is a perfectly fine name, but it just didn’t sufficiently convey my regard). Love you and miss you, Coach; my deepest condolences, Rosie (and the rest of your brood).

A finer person there’s not! I witnessed first hand the long hours that Kenneth and Rosie put in while working at PNG. You never heard him complain or get angry or lose his cool. If I saw you today, Kenneth, I would say thank you for the wonderful example that you showed me to be as a professional and the dedication you gave all of our students
