Lola Mae Browning Powell was born October 4, 1927, the eighth and youngest child of Amos Seth Browning and Babe Highnote Browning, in Winnsboro, Texas. She married James Lloyd Powell on April 22, 1948. The couple eventually moved to Groves, Texas, where they settled on Monroe Blvd. Their son, Brant Lloyd Powell, was born in 1952. When her son was in high school, Lola attended school to become a cosmetologist, after which she opened her own beauty shop at home, Lola's Style Shop. Lola and James were active in area square dance clubs for many years, and in recent years Lola enjoyed participating in a quilting group. She leaves behind many dear and treasured friends. Having been preceded in death by all her siblings and in September by her husband of 62 years, she is survived by son Brant, daughter-in-law Rosemary, and grandson Adam Kirk Powell of Spokane, Washington. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2011 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas with Chaplain Wayne McEwen officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Aunt Lola was an original. I always admired her sass and her outspokeness. We were glad we got to visit with her and James last summer. She will be missed, along with Uncle James.
