Carrie Lorene Hubbard Broussard, age 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 31, 2019. Lorene was born December 31, 1921 to Bennie and Harry Hubbard, Sr. in the rural community of Rocky Springs, Angelina County, TX and grew up on a farm in a close knit family of 4 brothers and 1 sister. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1939 before moving to Port Neches with her family a few years later. After moving to the Port Neches area, she worked at TSO as one of the first employees hired by Mr. Ben Rogers. In 1942 Lorene married William Downs, Sr. Together they had her only son, William "Bill" Downs. In 1952 Lorene married Gilroy "Bruce" Broussard. They celebrated 63 years of a beautiful life together. They were devoted to one another, and their marriage was an inspiration to many. Together they traveled and were bridge players, a game she enjoyed up until the time of her death. They were also avid PNG Indian football fans who enjoyed season tickets for 56 years. Bowling was one of her favorite activities, and she participated in a bowling league for many years. Lorene was a devoted Christian who loved her Lord and Savior. She served Him for many years at First United Methodist Church of Port Neches where she sang in the choir until she moved to Calder Woods in Beaumont at the age of 95. Her beautiful smile and soft spoken demeanor will be remembered by all who knew or met Lorene. Those who knew her as a mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend will cherish many fond and precious memories which include her famous coconut pie. Lorene is survived by her son, William "Bill" Downs and wife Jan of Horseshoe Bay, TX; grandson Greg Downs and wife Tammy of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandson Darryl Downs and wife Heidi of Dubai. She is survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives. Lorene is preceded in death by her husband, Gilroy "Bruce" Broussard; parents, Bennie and Harry Hubbard, Sr.; 4 brothers, Harry, Morris, Billy Earl, and Coy and sister, Lois Lovett. The family would like to thank the loving and caring staff of Calder Woods in Beaumont where she spent most of the last 2 years of her life in independent living. The caregivers at Earth Angels were especially kind to her with Kathi Nerren holding a special place in her heart. The family would also like to express our love and gratitude to Donna Hubbard Greer for her tireless care and expressions of love toward her "Auntie" Lorene. If you prefer, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Port Neches. Visitation will be at First United Methodist Church in Port Neches on February 4th at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of her life will begin at 2:00 officiated by Reverend Curtis Matthys and Lynn Fontenot, Chaplain of Calder Woods. Lorene and my mother were longtime friends. My mother, Dorothy Champagne was a bridesmaid at her and Bill's wedding. As fate would have it, her and my mother ended up spending the last year and a half together at Calder Woods. Finding their friendship once again. The several times I ate with them at lunch, Lorene's beautiful and welcoming smile made everyone feel like family. My condolences to the family. She was truly an angel walking and gracing us.

Deepest condolences to all. All that was said in her obituary is exactly right of Lorene. She came from an excellent family with an exemplary Christian upbringing that lasted her entire life. Many, besides her family, have lost a dear friend in Lorene. Please keep your precious memories close to your precious hearts because you all were so precious to her. Sincerely, Dianne Thompson Hollier and don, Brandon L. Hollier Formerly of Port Neches and former members of FUMC Port Neches

Lorene's mother Bennie was my grandmother's (Linnie Alexander Turner) sister so we were cousins. Throughout the decades I had the great pleasure of seeing Lorene as I visited family in Port Neches from time to time and, more recently, as I would take my mother (Sandy Theiss Bilbrey) to see her at Calder Oaks. When I think of Lorene it is with great fondness and love. Every time I would see her she would greet me with her bright, sunny smile and with great joy. That was a true gift from God that led to conversations about family and her evident, deep faith. Doubtless she shared her faith with many as she honored the great commission of her Lord and Savior. I will miss her dearly, her pleasant voice, her genuine affection, her big hugs, her fantastic cooking she inherited from Aunt Bennie, and most of all her wonderful, contagious smile! Be held by the arms of Jesus my sweet cousin.
