Marvin John Ermel, 87 of Nederland passed away peacefully with his family at his side at his home in Nederland, Texas on Friday, September 9, 2022. He has now earned his wings and is at peace with the Lord.
Marvin was born June 4th, 1935 in Edcouch, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. John and Effie Dahl Ermel and became a lifelong resident of Nederland in 1944 after his parents moved from Edcouch, Texas.
He married Joann Wood Ermel and they spent the most beautiful life building their home and family. Marvin and his wife were the best of friends and lived to show others that when God is the center of two bringing them together that they would weather all storms and they did. What an amazing love. They celebrated their 10th, 25th, 40th and 50th Anniversaries and hoped for many more years. Those milestone anniversaries were in honor of the daily life they shared, the good morning sugars, the love pats and smiles they shared every day. Marvin was a child of God and was baptized in Mercedes, Texas on August 4, 1935. He and his wife have been members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Nederland Texas for most of their married life. Marvin and Joann have built many, many friendships and family through their union of marriage and with their church family.
Marvin's two siblings are a sister, (deceased) Helen Ermel Harbour and brother-in-law, Elmer Harbour (deceased) he also has a brother, Ronald Ermel who resides in Houston, Texas and sister-in-law, Elna Smith Ermel. His siblings gave Marvin a niece and nephews, Carolyn, David, Gary, Jonathan and Daniel (deceased).
Marvin graduated from Nederland High in 1953 and was an honorary attendee for five consecutive years of perfect attendance. Marvin was very athletic and was on the varsity baseball team for the Nederland Bulldogs. He was also an avid league bowler and had a 299 game to his credit.
Marvin was a great man who learned many things in his lifetime, most by experience, trial and error but he perfected all that he possibly could, starting with his mind to his life and the lives of others. He touched the ones who he loved with a love of genuine emotion without expectation of anything in return. He never boasted or bragged over his accomplishments which there are too many to speak of in his lifetime, from helping others to succeed in their endeavors, to showing them how to succeed. He was proud of his brother and never wanted anything but the best for him as he felt nothing but love for he and his sister who are now deceased as of January of this year. Helen was his sister who at times mothered Marvin growing up and he knew nothing but that respect and love for such a good woman that she was.
Marvin worked his first job as a paperboy delivering papers on a bike with dual saddle bags. He then went on to work at Don's Drive-In working at a concession stand. He worked for Bergen's Ice Cream Company, the Texas Highway Department, and Ideco (which became Dresser Rand) in Beaumont for 7 years and was also certified for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning in Youngstown, Ohio.
Marvin hired on with DuPont Beaumont Works September 10, 1960 and retired December 31, 1994. He met and made many friends along the way working at Caprolactam for 3 years, Nordel for 5 years with Harold Wedge, and at the plant 3 years before transferring to the Hypalon unit where he worked for over 20 years.
Marvin was also a veteran who served his country by volunteering with the National Guard, Company D -111th Eng. BN 36th infantry Division from 1955 at North Fort Hood, Texas until 1963.
He was presented a cash award while working in the Hypalon area for suggesting a new type of gasket material which was less expensive and more efficient for the Ends Dams. As a result of his suggestion, both Hypalon plants in Beaumont, Texas and Maydown, Ireland began utilizing it.
After having met many and made friends through the years when Marvin retired, his knowledge, skills and understanding at Hypalon unit was still needed. After retiring he volunteered to train his replacement.
Marvin is the father of Robin Dale Ermel of Barney, Ga.; Rhonda Renee Bosquez, address unknown; Diana Lynn Brison of Nederland, Texas; Tim Hall of Nederland Texas (deceased); Theresa Hall of Bridge City, Texas and Tony Hall of Nederland Texas (deceased). His love lives on through them today.
As a child of Marvin John Ermel's, we learned how to work hard, do things correctly the first time to save time. He instilled pride in a job well done. We were taught kindness not by words alone, but by example. We have had the best father any child could possibly ever wish for. We feel blessed by God for having him all the years. A true man of the highest integrity, respect, love and honor, truly. He is our daddy and will live on forever in our hearts and memories.
A number of grandchildren spent their lives being with him from their day of birth. He would feed them and when or if needed change them as a baby. His grandchildren have spent vacations together, were taught how to do many things such as construction work, how to bowl knocking the pins down and where to aim on the alley. Their paw paw competed with the professional bowlers in Las Vegas, Nevada at one time. Their paw paw was a perfectionist but never made anyone feel less than if they struggled, but he just kept helping them. Paw Paw taught them everything by example. Those same grandchildren helped in his time of need in the end in several ways but in all ways love and respect for a dear sweet man. Chrystal Harwood, Heather Teltschick, Shane Hall, Lanie Hall, Claire Hall, Ashleigh Weber, and Shelly Baker. Today, his grandchildren have added great grandchildren so the more the merrier to share life with and to love. What a blessing it has been to be a part of such a wonderful man’s life.
