Mary Elise Strange Hooks, 60, passed away on April 14, 2013 in Port Arthur, Texas at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, November 20, 1952. Her parents are Robert Tinsley Strange, Sr. and the late Violette Elise Braswell Strange. As she was often quoted, "I was born a Yankee, but got to Texas as fast I could." Mary was raised and lived all of her life in Port Neches. She was the wife of Vernon J Hooks for over 41 years, and a proud mother of their baby girl, Marcie Elise Hooks McClellan. However, she was "Mama Mary", "Crazy Mary", and the "Purple Lady" to many other people blessed to have her in their lives. She was as wonderful grandmother to Natasha Brazil McClellan of California. Mary Hooks graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School, attended Lamar University, and worked many long years in retail businesses. She was currently working at Kirkland's in Beaumont where she excelled at selling and making a myriad of friends. Mary loved her friends with a passion that was only matched by her love of her PNG Indians. Whatever she did, she did it with her full heart as her many friends and family members can testify. She was an avid pet lover who rescued animals just like she did people. She loved collecting many different things and "antiquing". She was a chapter queen of the Red Hat Society and also a member of Central Baptist Church of Port Neches. Mary is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Juanita and Smead Braswell, her paternal grandparents, Violet Helen Cotton ("the grandmother that loved her") and Dr. Skyler Cotton, as well as her other parents TJ "Pop" Hooks and Cleo "Mimi" Hooks. She is survived by her three siblings, Ann Woodall, Port Neches, Bob Strange, Warren, and Sanford Strange, Anchorage, Alaska, their spouses, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces. She is also survived by her in-laws, James and Carolyn Hooks, Flower Mound, Texas and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her "adopted children", Lori Lawson, Alyssa Simmons, Starlyn Arline, Lauren Nichols, Charis Moreno, Tammy Shutter, Susi Walker, Cassie Hartman, and her "Little Lisa". Visitation is planned for Wednesday, April 17 from 5 8:00 p.m. at Levingston Funeral Home in Port Neches and funeral services will be at Central Baptist Church, Port Neches, Thursday at 1:00 p.m. The family requests that visitors dress casually and wear PURPLE to honor Mary's deep love of her PNG Indians. Memorial donations can be made to the Diabetes Association or the Humane Society of Southeast Texas.

I just learned of Mary's passing. I met her when she worked at Central Mall, when I was employed there as a security officer. She was a nice person with a good sense of humor, and I'm proud to have known her. Sending thoughts and prayers for the family.

Mary there is so much that we were still suppost to share together. Although the girls and I moved just down the road, I felt as if the world would end when I didn't have you for a backyard neighbor. I will cherish every morning you and I shared coffee together while wearing our pajamas in the backyard and the times we would sit in the yard and pull weeds or take care of plants until our worries were far from mind. My daughters truly loved you "ALWAYS AND FOREVER". I"m so glad I got to share them with you. Vernon and Marcie thank you so much for sharing Your Mary with us. God Bless

Vernon and Marcie, My heart goes out to you. I will so miss Mary's hugs at work. We had a special bond between us as we were the oldest. We always joked about it. May God give you peace this week and the weeks to come. Love you

To my sweet, wonderful, precious, loving adopted Mama Mary...you are finally reunited with so many you loved who left before you. Those of us left behind will do our best to honor you and we promise to love you ALWAYS AND FOREVER! Thank you for all that you did to encourage and protect each of my children while we had you here with us. Heaven is rejoicing to have gained such a special angel. Our tears are for all of the remaining times we will pick up the phone to share one more exciting thing or just to seek advice to only know you won't be there to answer. We will strive to be as strong as you taught us! All my love...your other daughter and grand kids!

I cannot say good bye because it is simply not something I can wrap my heart around that 'Momma Mary' is gone - not gone from my heart, but gone from this earth. You made an impact on my life and always opened your home to me and I love you more than anything. May you find peace in heaven and we will be together, all of us, one day when God is ready to call the rest of us to be with you and the rest of his angels. With love today and always - Charis

Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear. Into each life some rain must fall but sunshine does appear. It brings with it a rainbow and a message at is clear. Please know that you are not alone that we all hold you dear. Let faith and hope into your heart and keep her memories near. No time on earth is long enough to share with those we love or to prepare our hearts for good-bye. May time soften the pain until all that remains is the comfort of memories and love. The tide recedes but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand. The sun goes down but gentle warmth still lingers on the land, The music stops and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains... For every joy that passes, something beautiful remains.

Mama Mary, i love you so, you will be truly missed! Apparently God was ready for you to come and be with him in paradise, to teach the rest of the Angels Cherokee. Mary, I never in a million years would have thought I would be writing this so soon. I don't know for the life of me how I will ever go on without you. Forty years is a long time to know and love someone like I do you. We have shared so many memories and I am so thankful for all of them. You were always so involved in taking care of others that you ignored your own health needs. Thanks for always loving me and taking care of me and always being there for me, and I for you. I will miss you, but wait for me, I will see you again. Love A&F. Connie

Vernon, Marcie and family: Words can't express what we are feeling right now. Mary was a very special cousin to us. She always had a smile on her face. I remember after we moved away, and had come home,we went to see her at the mall. She wasn't at the kiosk so we waited. She walked up, saw us, and screamed. People turned to look, thinking someone was attacking her. Wish we could be with ya'll during this time. Know that you will all be in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers....love to all

Vernon and Marcie: We cannot even begin to express how sad we feel right now. Mary was such a wonderful person, no matter how she felt she always had a beautiful smile on her face and kept on going. She was such a beautiful example for everyone. Our family loved (and still do) her so very much and talked about her often. She gave us wonderful memories and always made us feel loved. We will miss her so very much. Please know if you need anything we are just a couple of blocks overcall or come by. Our prayers are with you both and your family.

Dear Marcie, I just wanted to express to you my sincere heartfelt sympathy in the passing of your sweet mom. Everytime I went into Kirklands we would always compare stories of you and Amy. I went into Kirklands last Thursday and looked for her. She was a precious person to so many as you well know. Cherish all the memories of your mom. Love you sweet girl!
