Mary Marjorie Moore

Marjorie Moore passed away on March 20, 2010 in the Cypress Glen Nursing Home after a brief illness. She was born on November 2, 1928 in Port Arthur to Mildred and Pete Johnson. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Gwendolyn Lucille Place, who resided in Tulsa, OK. Marjorie is survived by her husband of 59 years, architect, Lee F. Moore and her daughter, Leanne Moore. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Bradley Place and her niece, Mary Kay Place and her nephews, Bradley Place, Jr. and Ken Place and by her sister-in-law, Mariana Moore and her nephew, John Boyer Moore, Jr. She is also survived by her grand nephew, Jess Place, her grand nieces, Emma Place, Claire Place and Jenny Place, and great grand nephews, River Sage Russell and Uriah Sun. Marjorie attended public schools in Port Arthur, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, where she played the trumpet in high school band. She then went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin where she received a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in math. She is a 50 year member of Alpha Phi Sorority. Marjorie met her husband, Lee , at UT at the Christian Science college organization and they were married in 1950 and moved back to Port Arthur where they have lived ever since. Marjorie taught school at Woodrow Wilson Junior High and also at Thomas Edison Junior High, where she became Head of the Math Dept. Upon retiring from teaching school in 1985, Marjorie partnered with fellow teacher, Mildred Gernentz, and they started a travel company that sponsored over 50 trips to cities in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, China and Russia. They invited all of their friends on these trips, with many fond memories enjoyed by all. Marjorie has been a Camp Fire Girl since early on and has continued to meet annually with her original Camp Fire group, including weekend camp outs to Camp Waluta in Silsbee, Texas. She was awarded a Distinguished Citizen of Port Arthur in 1979 and served as a Grand Juror. She was a very active member of the First Church Christ, Scientist in Port Arthur and also in the Beaumont Church where she served as a Trustee, Clerk, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher. Marjorie had many friends, including childhood friends, and always treated them to wonderful meals and desserts. Everyone loved to share in her perfect afternoon tea parties and all will miss her chocolate pudding pie. But most of all, Marjorie's kindness, generosity and entertaining personality endeared her to her family and friends and she greatly cherished her times with them. Marjorie served The Museum of the Gulf Coast in many capacities and in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions may be made to the Gulf Coast Museum in Port Arthu . A Memorial Service and Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 10 at 1:30p.m. at The United Methodist Temple for all family and friends.
