Mary Elizabeth Nelson, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother (Grammy), passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, in Port Arthur, Texas, at the age of 96. Born on April 8, 1930, Mary lived a life filled with joy and devotion, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Mary found comfort and community as a member of Magnolia Assembly of God Church in Port Neches, Texas. Her days were often brightened by the simple pleasures of life; she enjoyed playing board games, tackling challenging puzzles, and the excitement of vacationing. Mary also had a special fondness for driving, which she often indulged by taking memorable day trips.

Mary is survived by her son, Steve Stewart, and his wife, Donna of Port Neches; her grandchildren, Natalie Essman and her husband, James of Magnolia, Texas, Mason Stewart of Beaumont, and Bailey Stewart of Port Neches; and her great-grandchildren, Brantley Hernandez of Port Neches, Isla Essman of Magnolia, Texas, and Lilliana Essman of Magnolia, Texas. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Luther and Tressie Scott;, her husband George Nelson of 47 years; her brothers, Edward Scott, Robert Scott, and Luther Scott, Jr.; her sisters, Frances Milam, Mildred Kireta, and Louise Claycomb; and her grandson, Colin Stewart.

A visitation to celebrate Mary's life will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 2001 Nall Street, Port Neches, Texas.

Later in the week, Mary will be laid to rest at Roselawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Thank you for sharing with us the photos of your mother. She certainly looked like she was a woman to wear crowns. It is never easy to say goodbye to our loved ones but saying goodbye to our moms is especially difficult. I pray good memories will sustain your family thru these hard days ahead. Sending prayers.
