Mary Louise Thompson

1928 ∼ 2024

Mary Louise Thompson, age 96, of Nederland, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024. She was born on May 8, 1928, in Finney County, Kansas. At the tender age of 14, she moved to Garden City, Kansas, where she began her lifelong journey of love and service within her community.

Mary devoted much of her professional life to the local establishments in Garden City, working diligently at a grocery store and a cafe. It was in this charming cafe where she would meet the love of her life, Dempsey Oscar Thompson, who would periodically arrive to order a nickel cup of coffee and tip her a dime. Their union would endure for 39 wonderful years until his passing.

A pillar in her community, Mary was an exemplary member of the Central Baptist Church of Port Arthur, where she served faithfully for 35 years as the Church Hostess and Dietician for the church school and daycare. Her unwavering dedication earned her the respect and admiration of countless individuals who cherished her selfless contributions to church life.

Mary had a vibrant personality, always making it a point to never miss her regular Saturday visits to the beauty shop, ensuring she maintained her signature style. She was known for her love of roses, hummingbirds, and plants, and lived for the joy brought to her life by her grandchildren. She was especially proud of her family and her faith, exemplifying her devotion as she nurtured those around her.

Mary is survived by her son, Gerald Dwayne Thompson, and his wife, Yolenis of Beaumont, and her daughter, Rhonda Lynn Brennan of Nederland. She was a dedicated grandmother to Brandy Lynn Trahan and her husband, C.J., Jr. of Port Neches, Randy Dwayne Thompson and his wife, Summer of Port Neches, Eric "Conner" Brennan and his wife, Kristina of Groves, John Ford of Vidor, and Tommy Ford of Vidor. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved great-grandchildren: Rylan Boettger, Scout Thompson, Scarlett Thompson, Dilynn Trahan, Knox Brennan, and Quinn Brennan.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dempsey; her parents, Gerald and Alice Dillon; her son, Robert Dempsey Thompson; her step-daughter, Betty Ruth Thompson; her son-in-law, Eugene Brennan, her brothers, John Dillon and Kenneth Dillon; and her sisters, Virginia Dillon and Georgia Ruth Miller.

A visitation in memory of Mary Louise Thompson will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Both events will take place at Grace Baptist Church, located at 3417 Berry Avenue, Groves, Texas, 77619. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Nederland, Texas.

Mary Louise Thompson will be remembered not only for her steadfast devotion to her church and family but also for her loving spirit and the warmth she shared with everyone she met. She leaves a legacy of love, faith, and dedication that will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

I always enjoyed seeing Mary Lou and Rhonda at our Bechelmayr Family Reunions in Marion KS. Mary Lou and Rhonda were always the ones who came the farthest. Mary Lou was always the oldest. This picture is from the August 2022 reunion. I loved the video on the website.

I have admired Mary since meeting her after I joined Central Baptist Church in early 2000. Being in the same Sunday School class, we did projects together. I admired how she “kept on keeping on”. Mary’s attitude at her age inspired me - she served the Lord well. I loved Mary, she was my friend!

What a beautiful tribute! We will always remember Mary’s smiling face as she was behind the counter serving the Wednesday night crowd for the meal. It seemed to be understood that it was “Mary’s kitchen.” May peace be with all the family during this time of loss.
