Matilda "Tay" Steed Smith, 93, of Port Arthur, Texas passed away Monday, April 9, 2012. "Tay" was born September 17, 1918 in Port Arthur, Texas to William H. Steed and Anna Rye Steed. She was married to Donald Charles Smith, Sr. for 55 years. She was a graduate of Port Arthur College in 1937 and earned her BA and BS degrees in 1942 from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University). She taught elementary school for one year. She and her husband lived in the Middle East for the first several years of their marriage and returned to Port Arthur. She was employed as a secretary for 20 years by Sabine Towing and Transport. She was a lifetime member and enthusiastic participant in the Port Arthur Little Theater and the Concert Association of Southeast Texas and also a member and contributor of the Texas Artist Museum. "Tay" was preceded in death by her half-brother, Walter Sims. Survivors include her husband, Don Smith, Sr.; sister Jim Everett of College Station; step-son, Don C. Smith, Jr. and wife, Jane of Tyler; grandsons, Matt and wife Emily Smith, Sean and J. D. Smith; great-grandchildren, Tobin and Heidi Smith and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves with Reverend Carl VanDevender officiating.
