Nelda Gay Phillips

1939 ∼ 2026

Nelda Gay Phillips, a beloved housewife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away on February 16, 2026, in Port Arthur, Texas. Born on December 21, 1939, in Grant, Louisiana. She warmed the hearts of those around her with her kind spirit, witty personality, and unwavering dedication to her family.

A devoted daughter, she was predeceased by her parents, James and Ollie Henry, her second husband of twenty years, Curtis Phillips, her first husband of thirty-eight years, Eston Horton, her beloved daughter, Dorothy Garlington, precious grandson, William "Little Billy" Horton, and sister, Paula. She leaves behind a loving family who will carry forth her legacy of nurturing and love. Nelda is survived by her daughter, Cindy Watkins and her husband, Maurice "Termite" Watkins of Crosby, Texas; her sons, Henry Horton and his wife, Jan of Mittie, Louisiana; and Billy Horton and his wife, Lisa of Nederland, Texas. Her legacy also continues with her nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, each of whom holds treasured memories of their beloved Maw Maw. Nelda will be fondly remembered by her brother, James D. Henry and his wife, Fran of Port Neches, Texas and sisters, Jenice Conway and Darla LaBorde.

Nelda enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with her husband Curtis and cherished the memories she created with him and his friends and family in Mississippi. She was known for her many talents, particularly in the area of sewing where she was an excellent seamstress. This included her love of quilting beautiful masterpieces which showcased her creativity and dedication to the art. She was also an avid lover of collecting dolls. These passions were only surpassed by her immense love of children as she ran a registered daycare. To many, she was known as Nanny. For countless years Nanny cared for children in her home and ministered to untold numbers of families by helping raise and nurture their precious babies. She adored these children and kept close contact with many of them throughout the years.

A devoted member of Triangle Baptist Church, Nelda's faith was an integral part of her life. Her warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, as she actively participated in her church community, sharing her love and compassion with those around her.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Nelda's life at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland, Texas. Visitation will be held on February 20, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. A graveside service will be held at Palestine Baptist Church Cemetery in Mittie, Louisiana following the funeral service.

Nelda Gay Phillips will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her loving presence, nurturing spirit, sense of humor, and remarkable talents will forever remain a cherished memory in the hearts of her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made in her honor to the Youth Ministry at Triangle Baptist Church in Nederland, Texas.

Ms. Nelda made an impact on so many lives. She will be missed. I will miss her wisdom and humor. She was a dedicated member of Triangle. She always wanted to know how many were in the class that day. Everyone looked forward to Sat calls for us to be in Sunday School!
