Norman Anthony Desmarais Jr.

Norman A. Desmarais, Jr., age 66, of Nederland, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016 surrounded by his children at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Norman was born on April 3, 1950 in Providence, RI. He graduated high school in 1968 from Norwich Free Academy Norwich, CT. On February 13, 1973, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as an Air Traffic Controller until 1977. Following his military service, he attended the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1982 with a B.A. in History. Norman's love for the law led him to South Texas College of Law, Houston where he graduated in May, 1996, with a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree. Norman believed in the justice system and loved his role as an attorney until his illness forced him into retirement. His favorite saying when he left each morning was "I'm off to do Justice".
He is survived by his father, Norman A. Desmarais Sr.; daughters, Savanah Desmarais, Nikki Frederick-Smith and son, Jason Desmarais all of Nederland; sisters, Margaret Mary Fayden of Norwich, CT, Maureen Nelson and husband, David Nelson of Pawcatuck, CT, Rosemary Desmarais of Sanford, NC; grandchildren, Jordan, Emma, Connor, and Wade as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Norman is preceded in death by his mother Margaret Mary Desmarais, brothers, Daniel Desmarais, Mark Desmarais; sister, Eileen Couture.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Father Sinclair Oubre officiating followed by the bestowing of military honors.
