Oliver “Wendell” Holmes, 87, of Port Neches, Texas went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. Wendell was born on April 29, 1935 in Abbeville, Louisiana to the late James Whitfield Holmes and Evalina Mills Holmes.
Wendell proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After the Navy, Wendell went to work for Goodrich-Gulf as an operator. He stayed employed with the company and its predecessors until he retired after 27 years of service. In his spare time, Wendell enjoyed hunting and fishing in Texas and Louisiana, and loved being outdoors where he would engulf himself in nature. He also loved his wife’s home cooked meals, eating ice cream, and watching the news. Wendell was a man of God and his faith was strong. He was hard-working and always provided for his family. Wendell was loving a husband, father “Grandpa,” and great “Grandpa.” He will be deeply missed by all that knew him.
Those left to cherish Wendell’s memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Catherine Holmes; his daughter, Tamia Cooper and her husband, Charlie; his son, Andy Holmes and his wife, Jennifer, Cindy Orr and her husband, David; his grandchildren, Brittany Ports and her husband, Jon, Nathaniel Holmes, Miranda Rose, Caleb Cooper and his wife, Courtney, Dustin Holmes and his wife, Candace, Dylan Holmes and Deanna, Damian Orr; his great-grandchildren, Bennett Ports, Jillian Ports, Lincoln Cooper, Graham Cooper, Emma Love Holmes; his sister, Mattie “Mitzi” Rollow; and numerous loving cousins and family members. Wendell is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dane Holmes; and six siblings.
A meal for the family will be served at 12:00 p.m. at Magnolia Assembly of God Church, 2215 Nall Street, Port Neches, Texas 77651, on Monday, June 27, 2022. Following the meal, a gathering of family and friends for a visitation will be held in the church sanctuary and will begin at 1:00 p.m. The Funeral Service for Wendell will immediately follow the visitation in the church and will begin at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
