Paul Beard

1933 ∼ 2020

Paul Beard, a man of modest beginnings left this world in a humble and peaceful manner on Saturday, the 28th of March 2020 at age 86. Born in Broaddus, Texas on August 24, 1933, Paul arrived at Port Arthur College after graduating high school at the age of 16. After earning his Associates Degree, he began working as an inventory clerk at what is now Sabine Universal Products where he rose through the ranks to be named president and eventually owner. In October of 2019, Paul celebrated his 69th anniversary with the business. He met and married the love of his life, Grace, and was a devoted husband and proud father of their 13 children. Paul believed in service and duty, was a religious man, a family man, and a business man. Paul was appointed to the board of the Beaumont Navigation District by Judge Carl Griffith in July of 1998, and in that role, collaborated with commissioners and legislators to create the Sabine-Neches Navigation District. He served as Chairman of the board since 1999. Paul felt so fortunate to see the funding of the deepening project, which along with Randy Reese, will be their legacy. Pauls commitment ran deep! Paul has enriched the lives of countless people through his community service. He was a valued member of the local Propeller Club and a Lifetime Member of the Sertoma Club. Paul was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served on the parish council. He served on the school board of Bishop Byrne High School and was foreman on two Jefferson County grand juries. He was presented with the Port Arthur News Father-of-the-Year in 1964, Maritime Person of the Year Award, the Tom Jackson Sabine Neches Waterway Outstanding Service Award, and the Arthur Stillwell Award. Proposed by State Representative Joe Deshotel, Paul was honored by resolution on the floor of the State of Texas House of Representatives in April of 2015. Paul loved his Thursday nights with his poker buddies, Sheilas strawberry cakes, Esthers gumbo, and working with the board and supportive staff of the SNND. The family would like to thank Stella for caring for Dads home and Home Care Elite for their tender care of Dad over the last several months. Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Grace Thompson Beard; daughter, Leslie Sapp; his parents, Ora Mae and Ernest Beard; and several siblings. He is survived by twelve of his children: David (Jenny), Sue (Karl Hanner), Mark (Lori), Chris (Maureen), Paula (Steve Housinger), Cherie (Mike Heard), Anita (Jody Barsalou), Joey (Tamra), George, Scott (Jo Ann), Steven (Michelle) and Kevin, 32 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Paul also leaves behind a sister, Edna Machann, brothers Hubert (Betty), Oscar (Nancy) and Raymond (Dianne), other extended family and many close friends. Arrangements are in the care of Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. Due to current world events, a visitation and funeral service are not possible at this time. The Beard children will have a private graveside service, conducted by Fr. Sinclair Oubre, on Tuesday at Greenlawn Cemetery. The service will be live streamed at the Apostleship of the Sea Diocese of Beaumonts Facebook page. Once restrictions are lifted, a memorial mass and celebration of Pauls life will be held at a later date. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift can be made to the International Seafarers Center or the charity of your choice.

To the Beard Family- Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your father, Paul Beard. I knew Paul for many, many years. A fine gentleman, a fierce competitor in business. Our company and Sabine Propeller use to occasionally bump heads for marine business in Port Arthur. Drago Supply usually came out on the short end of the stick! But that's O.K. I know my father, Philip Drago, Sr., also thought highly of Paul. Paul will be missed by his many, many friends. Mark Beard, thinking of you during this trying time for your family. God Bless the Beard Family.

Port Arthur and all of Southeast Texas has lost an icon. Forever the servant to the betterment of the community, Paul Beard was one of a kind. No higher compliment to one's life than ....he gave back much more than he was given. Paul was that person. Mr. Paul Beard was an amazing man and a Man on a Mission. I have had the privilege of serving him and his fellow Sabine-Neches Navigation District Commissioners and their loyal Team in Washington, DC for many years. Because of Paul and his fellow Commissioners and team, this work has been so much more to me than a job. It has become my mission as well. Paul was always strong, kind and persistent. He held us accountable and ensured we had all we needed to advance the ball. Paul absolutely made me feel like family and is just one of Southeast Texas' finest. I am better for having known him, and it is an honor to have served him and an honor to fight as hard as I can for him and the mission. Paul, thank you for leading us for so many years. God Bless you, your bride and your wonderful family. I will miss you very much, and I am eternally grateful for your support and all the confidence you placed in me. My most sincere thoughts and prayers go up to your wonderful family in this time of loss. Your loyal friend, Milam.

The whole Flanagan Family would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Beard Family on the passing of Paul Beard. Paul was truly a shining example in our community of husband, father, businessman, grandfather and true Christian man in every sense of the word. He was also a shining example of "Good and Faithful Servant" and spent countless hours and years as an advocate for our community, our Catholic schools and in particular the Sabine Neches Waterway. There was probably no greater advocate for the deepening and widening and expansion of our waterway than Paul. The City of Port Arthur and all of Southeast Texas owe him a lot. Paul was an inspiration to many because of all that. His attributes and accomplishments to his family and community were made that much more exemplary because he did it all while dealing with physical infirmities that would have stopped almost anyone else. What I remember about Paul is his smile, his booming voice, his enthusiasm, his strong hand shake, and most of all his love for family and community. What an amazing example he was! It will be difficult if not impossible to replace a man like that. Our love and prayers for the Beard Family at this time. Sincerely, Tom Flanagan and the Flanagan Family

The most amazing grandpa you could've ever asked for. Such a sweet and intelligent man. I remember back in middle school we had to do a family tree book, and in that we had to interview who we thought was very amazing/ interesting. I of course chose my grandpa. I still have it to this day and also still agree that my choice was the right one. I'm very thankful and blessed that my son, Jonah, got to grow up knowing his amazing "pawpaw" and they were best of buddies! We will always love and remember you grandpa. Fly high and walk gracefully with grandma!
