Rita Josephine Roy Mason, 93, of Port Neches, Texas passed away Thursday, December 15, 2022 as her loving family surrounded her in prayer. Rita was born in Evergreen, Louisiana on March 16, 1929 to the late Sheldon Roy and Clothile Mitchell Roy.
Rita was a devout parishioner at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Port Neches where she served on the bereavement committee for many years. Rita was a fabulous Cajun cook and known for her famous poundcake. She had a green thumb and enjoyed tending to her plants and flowers. When someone thought of Rita, they thought of a selfless and thankful woman who would do anything for anyone in need. Rita was widowed at a young age and took on many new responsibilities, including pumping her own gas and cutting her own grass. Rita was a strong willed, resilient and independent woman. Rita was a dedicated wife, mother, MawMaw and MeMe who loved her family with all of her heart and enjoyed attending many school and athletic events, graduations, and weddings. When someone would tell Rita that they loved her, she would always say back “I love you more.” Rita will truly be missed, and when you think of her, think of a kind smile saying “I love you more.”
Those left behind to cherish Rita’s memory are her daughter, Susan Peoples and her husband, Don; her son, Craig Mason and his wife, Maureen; her daughter, Sherry Weber and her husband, Gary; her son, Thad Mason and his wife, Amy; her granddaughter, Mandy Romero and her husband, Joey; her grandson, Matthew Peoples; her grandson, Bryan Mason; her grandson, Mitchell Peoples and his wife, Amber; her grandson, Micah Peoples and his wife, Hannah; her granddaughter, Lindsey Weber; her grandson, Mason Weber and his wife, Hannah; her grandson, Dustin Mason and his wife, Jennifer; her granddaughter, Shelby Mason; and her greatgrandchildren, Breck, Lillie, Evie, Waylon, and Max. Rita is preceded in death by her parents, Sheldon and Clothile Roy; her loving husband of 42 years, Louis C. Mason; and her siblings, Mable, Milbon, Mason, Marie and Pearl.
A gathering of family and friends for a visitation will be held on Monday, December 19, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland, Texas with a Rosary to be prayed at 1:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Port Neches, Texas on Monday December 19, 2022 and will begin at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
