Robert L. Gilbert

1932 ∼ 2023

Robert Louis Gilbert

Robert “Slick” L. Gilbert, 91, of Wildwood, Texas, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, surrounded by family.

Robert was born in Jasper, Texas, on April 20, 1932, to Roy and Elizabeth Gilbert. In 1954, Robert married his beloved wife Eva, and they shared a beautiful 49 years together. They welcomed four children; sons Wade, Mark and Bryan, and daughter Renee.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves.

In 1985, Robert retired from Texaco as a maintenance supervisor after 37 years of service. He was a hardworking man and kept himself busy to retire at such a young age. Robert, affectionately known as “Paw Paw,” lived a full life. A life full of love, family, and friends. He moved to Wildwood in 2005 where he loved to play golf and help with yard work for residents. He was always willing to help whoever needed it. Robert always had a project going on and loved starting something new outdoors, whether it be a patio or porch or a garden. Robert had a positive attitude and at his age, an independence that many envied. He always said, “at my age, you gotta make every move count.” He made sure of that. Robert, “Slick,” “Paw Paw” will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a very proud man, especially of his precious family.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Eva Ann Gilbert, and son Wade Lance Gilbert.

He is survived by his son, Mark Roy Gilbert, and wife Liz; daughter, Renee Marie Gilbert; son, Bryan Lee Gilbert; Grandchildren, Robert J. Gilbert, and fiancé Loryn; Mallory E. Roebuck and husband Christopher; Dawson Wade Gilbert and wife Harlee. Great-grandchildren, Charlie and Millie Roebuck, Baby Roebuck due May of this year; Ruby Gilbert; sister, Eloise Zummo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Buckner Children and Family Services of Beaumont, Texas.

Robert was my construction manager on our project to replace the linings in the brine reservoirs at the Texaco facility in Sour Lake. He was dedicated and resourceful and did an exceptional job for the project. I thoroughly enjoyed our year working together. Rest and relax, my friend. You have earned it.

I loved driving by and always seeing Robert out working in the yard. I would stop and we had many good talks. I will miss that. He was a strong man and I loved him. I am praying for the family.
