His tenure in his career was complemented by his honorable service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, followed by continued service in the U.S. Army Reserves. This military service not only shaped his character but also deepened his bond with his fellow servicemen.

A loving husband to his surviving wife of 57 years, Connie Mathison, Robert's devotion to his family was evident in all aspects of his life. Uncle Robert will forever be remembered and missed deeply! He was the humor to any conversation, strong willed, highly opinionated, and loved his country and family most of all! The care he showed to his great nieces and nephews showed strong, rarely missing any celebrations and sharing his love for sports and fishing! We love you!
