Roberto Hawkins passed away July 31, 2026, at the age of 84. Known to some as Robert, to some as Bob, to many as Papa Bob, and even to a select few as “Rubber Toe”, he was born January 19, 1942 in Colonia Dublán in Chihuahua, Mexico to Orson and Rita Hawkins. Roberto was the oldest of six children who grew up between Mexico and Pecos, TX. He was big brother to Ruthie, Gilbert, Rosemary, Joseph, and Lily. He graduated from Pecos High School 1960. He served three years in the United States Army which took him from Fort Campbell in Kentucky to Uijeongbu in South Korea during the Vietnam era. Roberto earned his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Lamar State College of Technology while working for the City of Port Arthur. He went to work at Gulf, then Chevron, then Clark Oil. He retired in 2000 as an Industrial Hygienist.
After a bit of convincing, Roberto convinced Raquel ‘Rachel’ Gloria to marry him on May 25, 1968. Her mother introduced them. Two years later, his first son Russell was born. Their second son Reagan was born in 1975. The couple were married for 58 years as of this past May! Sometimes, our mothers know best. He was blessed with a loving and still growing family. In 1978, he bought land and built a home in Port Neches. He lived his life to care and provide for his family. Between homework sessions and household chores, Roberto found the time to coach his sons on the baseball diamond and the football field. He loved sports and could be accused of being overzealous at times - but only because his heart belonged to his boys. His support continued through the next generation as well. He loved to see his grandchildren compete and perform. His family brought so much love and joy to his life.
Roberto grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he often played the piano in services. When he was of age, he completed his mission, preaching the word and spreading salvation. He loved his adopted hometown and the surrounding areas of Southeast Texas. He became an avid fisherman and hunter. Some of his best weekends were spent outdoors. He never lost his love for West Texas and would bring his sons to visit his dad every year, first in Presidio and then Valentine, TX. Those road trips were some of his fondest memories. He loved music and was known to sing and play his guitar when the mood struck him. He even shared his love of the guitar with some of his grandsons.
Roberto was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruthie and Lily; and his parents, Orson and Rita. He is survived by his wife, Rachel; his sons, Russell (wife April) and Reagan (wife Kim). Roberto was blessed with five grandkids and two bonus grandsons: JJ and Mark. His grandchildren are Josie Elizabeth, Jenna Raquel, Robert James, Isabelle Renée and Joseph Orson.
