Roger Kent Conwell, Ph.D.

Roger Kent Conwell, PhD, 76, of Port Neches, Texas passed away February 14, 2013 at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, Texas. He was born on March 29, 1936 in Wheeler, Texas to the late Buford and Gladys Holly Conwell. He served his country proudly in the U. S. Air Force. Kent authored over 40 westerns, 6 mysteries, and wrote a weekly article for the Port Arthur News. Kent retired after 33 years of teaching at Port Neches I.S.D. Kent grew up in the wideopen Texas Panhandle in the town of Wheeler, population 848. His love for the West came naturally, for his grandfather had run away from his Tennessee home when he was 14, bullwhacking from his way to the Panhandle where he met his future wife who had traveled from Illinois to Texas. After moving to Fort Worth, Kent was more at home at the stockyards than school. Somehow, he managed to earn a B.S. and began teaching. Later he moved to Port Neches, where he acquired a M.Ed. and Ph.D. A successful educator, his love for writing about the West, a period in history unique to America, has never waned. He has won awards for short stories, screenplays, mysteries, and westerns. He enjoyed fishing at Pleasure Island and swimming with his grandkids. His grandkids were the joy of his life, and he loved participating in their activities. He spent many years as a teacher, and after his retirement, he would often receive calls and visits from exstudents who would thank him for being such a positive influence in their lives.Funeral services will be held at Proctor Baptist Church in Port Arthur on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Rick Erwin officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.A gathering of family and friends will be held at Melancons Funeral Home in Nederland on Monday, February 18, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.Kent is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Priscilla Gail Conwell. I grew up about a mile and a half from the Conwells , just across a couple of pastures. He was three grades ahead of me in school. Wish i could have known him as an adult. I’m sure he was a great guy. Roland Miles, Wheeler Texas

Gayle and girls, Ive just learned about Kent and my heart is broken for you. He was such a wonderful friend and encourager to me. I have wonderful memories of sitting around Lela Davis kitchen table, critiquing our books every week. Before we could complete critiquing Kents chapters, hed be finished and sending his to his editor. He was one in a million a true hero and he never failed to mention his wonderful family and how much he enjoyed all those grandbabies with me when we emailed each other. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God be with you.

Mr. Conwell was my tenth grade English teacher at P.N.Groves High School. I remember him being a stern, no nonsense teacher but with a kind, gentle heart, behind that facade. I must share my Mr. Conwell story, which I have shared with others, many times throughout my life. During my tenth grade year, someone got into my locker, and either tore up my English book or replaced mine with one that was quite destroyed and unusable. I was a scared sophomore, who didnt know what to do. I thought for sure, that I would be found at fault, and have to pay to replace the book. When I told Mr. Conwell what had happened and showed him the condition of the English book he took it and said, that he would take care of it. I dont know what he did, but the next day in class, he had a new English book for me to use the remainder of the year. This incident was when I saw the kindhearted Mr. Conwell. I have never, and will never, forget what he did for me. I always read his column in the Port Arthur News. I enjoyed his home spun stories in the editorial section, which made you take the journey along with him. I must say, I did not agree with his political views, but I appreciate his passion for his opinions. My husband and I, extend our deepest sympathy to Mr. Conwells entire family, for your great loss. Sincerely, Larry Kay Block Bourghs

Mr. Conwell taught me English in high school. He was a fair man, very understanding, thorough. He actually cared about his students. I remember the flat top haircut cowboy boots. Truely a great man. I have read some of his westerns, also. I know he will be missed by friends family. Sorry for our loss, as I looked forward to his columns in The Penny Record. Class of 76.
