Roland E. Mitchell

Roland Eugene Mitchell, 89, of Port Arthur Texas passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family and his caregiver, Danielle Bollenbacher. Roland was born on January 27, 1934 in Port Arthur, Texas to the late William Long Mitchell and Gladys Lillian O’Grady Mitchell.

Roland was a lifelong resident of the Port Arthur area and attended church at The Temple. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1952. Shortly after high school, Roland was drafted into the military and served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army. After Roland was honorably discharged from the Army, he started his own air conditioning and heating business, Mitchell Service Company, that he owned and operated for over fifty years. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Roland was also a master wood worker and he specialized in cabinets and furniture. He could build pretty much anything imaginable, especially if the grandkids asked him. Roland was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His legacy will be carried on through all the love and wisdom that he instilled into the ones he left behind.

Those left to cherish Roland’s memory are his loving wife of 67 years, Clara “Tootie” Mitchell; his son, Tim Mitchell and his wife, Audrey of Nederland, Texas; his daughter, Pam Mitchell of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren, Britney Lyon and her husband, James, Zachary Roy and his wife, Erika, Lana Mitchell, Chelsea Logoteta, Chase Mitchell, Lauren Cook and her husband, Phillip, Adrian Ruecroft and her husband, Paul; his 12 great grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Roland is preceded in death by his parents, William and Gladys Mitchell; his sister, Gloria Usey; his brother, William Mitchell; and several loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Danielle and all the caring staff of Harbor Hospice for taking such good care of Roland.

A gathering of family and friends for a visitation will take place at Melancon’s Funeral home on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow and will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Melancon’s. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves, Texas.
