Ronald Jean Barras peacefully passed away on October 10th at Rosefield Court, just months shy of his 90th birthday. Jean was born to Inez Braquet Barras and Antoine Barras on February 26, 1934. He is a 1953 graduate of Bishop Byrne High School, where he was a captain on the state championship football team. He continued his football career at Rice University and was drafted into the professional football league. Jean was employed at BF Goodrich in Port Neches for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a very loving family man and enjoyed spending time with his former high school classmates. Jean took great pleasure in coaching and refereeing high school football. His favorite pastimes were playing tennis, golf, and hunting. Following retirement he celebrated his Cajun heritage and became actively involved in the Golden Triangle French Music Association and the Acadiana Cultural Community in Southwest Louisiana. He spent many a weekend dancing at Larry’s French Restaurant. Jean was an active member of Saint Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Port Neches and exhibited his benevolence by volunteering at the Golden Triangle Hospitality Center in Port Arthur.
Jean is survived by his children: Stephanie Plant of Cypress; Ronnie Barras and wife Phyllis of Groves; Anne Hanks and husband Kevin of Groves; Jeff Barras and wife Terri of Williamsburg, Virginia; and step-daughter, Kerri Babineaux of Nederland; grandchildren Casey Plant and wife Aida of New York City; Cody Plant of Houston; Katie Montalvo and husband Morris of Groves; Julie Fultz and husband Will of Port Neches; Amanda Delcambre and husband Logan of Port Neches; Britnie Hanks and husband James of Van Nuys, California; Alexander Hanks and wife Kassie of The Woodlands; Alan Hanks and wife Megan of Port Neches; Caitlyn Shuler and husband Kol of Richmond, Virginia; Spencer Barras and wife Blayne of Richmond, Virginia; Wendi Kemp; Nikki Afinowicz and husband Caine; Amanda Seymour; Amy LeBlanc and husband Larry; Joey Babineaux and wife Amy; and Jenni Ray and husband Cody; twenty-nine great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Patti Barras.
He was preceded in death by his wife Velma, his parents, and his brother Bobby Barras.
Services will be held at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland on Friday, October 13th. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. with a rosary recited at 10:30 a.m., funeral service at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Memory Gardens in Nederland.
Pallbearers are Ronnie Barras, Jeff Barras, Casey Plant, Cody Plant, Alexander Hanks, and Alan Hanks.
Jean’s family wishes to thank Best Hospice staff for their kindness and care during his last days.
