Rosa “Merl” Stokes Patterson, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, respected business owner, and woman of steadfast faith, passed peacefully from this life on April 24, 2026, in Winnie, Texas. Born on October 20, 1933, in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, she lived a long and meaningful life defined by conviction, compassion, and a deep love for her family.
Merl built a distinguished career as both a marine‑industry business owner and a bookkeeper. Yet it was her warmth, generosity, and ability to make every person feel welcome that truly set her apart. Sweet but strong, kind yet unwavering, she carried herself with a balance of grace and grit that earned the admiration of all who knew her.
Her passions were as vibrant as her favorite color—red—reflecting the spirited energy she brought to life. A talented musician, she found joy in playing the violin and harmonica. She loved singing, games, travel, and especially cruising, embracing every opportunity to experience the world with enthusiasm and gratitude.
At the heart of Merl’s life was her enduring faith in the Lord, a guiding light through every season. She took great pride in hosting weekly Sunday gatherings, creating a treasured tradition that brought her family together and filled her home with laughter, love, and lasting memories.
Merl is lovingly remembered by her husband of fifteen years, Billy Patterson, with whom she shared a life of companionship and devotion. She leaves behind her children—Karen Battenfield and husband Rodney, Diana Wolf, and Walter Stokes and wife Pam—along with a legacy carried forward by her many grandchildren: Jeremy Battenfield (Belinda), Ryan Battenfield, Lorynda Clopton (Dan), Kaylor Little (Brian), Jarrod Wolf (Whitney), Karrie Talbott (Shane), Kandace Selman (Dean), Dr. Christopher Stokes (Emily), Kelli Stokes, Robert Stokes (Meagon), and Alicia Pinder. Her family’s joy continues through twenty great‑grandchildren and five great‑great‑grandchildren, with two more on the way.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Fern Gray; her first husband, Robert Wesley Stokes, Sr.; her sons Robert Wesley Stokes, Jr. and Kenneth James Stokes; her great‑great‑grandchild Kaely Mae Battenfield; five sisters; two brothers; and her son‑in‑law Edgar Wolf. Each holds a sacred place in the family’s heart.
Visitation will be held on April 27, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas, located at 5601 39th Street. A funeral service will follow on April 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM, with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
