Roy Hamilton Lipe

1925 ∼ 2016

Roy Hamilton Lipe Roy was born in Shellmond, MS to Edwin Earl and Winnie Taylor Lipe on April 15, 1925 and passed away on November 12, 2016 in Groves, Texas at the age of 91. Roy graduated from Boyle High School, Boyle, MS in 1943. He then joined the United States Navy where he served as an Aviation Radio Airman and was stationed on the U.S.S. Hamlin in the Pacific during WWII. He came home and married his childhood sweetheart, Sue Tims in August 1947. After he graduated from Delta State Teachers College in 1949, he and Sue moved to Nashville, TN where he earned his Master's Degree from Peabody College. Roy started his teaching career in Cleveland, MS at the Delta State Demonstration School. In 1955 he moved his family to Port Arthur, TX where he began his 30 year career with P.A.I.S.D. first as a teacher at Lee Elementary. He then became the first Principal at Pease Elementary in Port Acres and then returned to Lee as Principal until his retirement in 1985. Roy spent his life serving his Lord, his family and his fellow mankind. He was a member of the Lakeview Lion's Club, the American Heart Association and the Port Arthur Rotary Club. He and Sue were 60 year members of the United Methodist Temple where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Board Member and on many committees. He was a longtime member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. Roy volunteered many years at the United Board of Missions where his passion was repairing toys to insure every child would have a toy for Christmas. He never failed to support his daughters in any activity they were involved in from band to their many Camp Fire Girls activities. He spent many hours at Camp Waluta blazing trails, uncovering the pool or doing anything necessary so that we and many other children had a wonderful summer camp experience. Roy never met a child in his career that he did not see the good and potential. To this day we still hear from past students and faculty who tell us how he touched their lives. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at The United Methodist Temple in Port Arthur with Reverend Guy Williams officiating. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 64 years Sue Tims Lipe; son-in-law Carl Bodin, brothers James E., twin Ray, and Earl Lipe; and sister Nell Lipe Cuevas. He is survived by his daughters, Martha Lipe Bodin and M.C. Lipe Herndon and husband Dan; his sister Billie Jean Hutchinson and brother Grover Lipe; two grandchildren Ricky Bodin (his buddy) and Christy Bodin Baker along with seven great-grandchildren, Elissia Rae Bodin, Kayson, Kenadie and Kenson DuBois, McKenna, Cale and Maggie Baker; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. A very special thanks to Penny Lee and her care home, Forever Young. To all of the sweet ladies who took such wonderful care of our Dad we can never say Thank You enough. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the United Board of Missions, Southeast Texas Humane Society or the charity of your choice.

I have so many wonderful memories of Mr. Lipe from Lee Elementary school, he was an amazing influence and someone I really respected. I had the chance to see him at church over the years when I was home, he always had a funny story to share about my antics growing up, it was delightful that he remembered our Lee gang so well. What a remarkable man, he will be missed.

I am saddened by the passing of Mr. Lipe. He truly cared about his students, touching thousands of lives during his professional career. I had the pleasure of being a student at Lee Elemetary from 1967-1973. He knew you and cared about you as a person. When I was in high school he wrote a note to me congradulating me upon graduation. I consider myself fourtunate to have known Mr Lipe. I feel as if I am speaking for the many young people he has positively influenced in his life and professional career. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Lipe. I was fortunate to be a student at Lee elementary school, where he was our Principal. Mr. Lipe probably had a bigger effect on me than any student in the history of that school. In my early years at Lee, he let me handle a bully on my own terms. He actually told me it would be OK to do that. After handling the situation I was a different person. Thanks to Mr. Lipe I grew up to be a secure and confident man. I am not exaggerating the effect this had on me. I wish the world had more men like him. The world would certainly be a better place. My sincere condolences to his wonderful family.

As the youngest of six children whose father left us when I was 2, Mr. Lipe's smile and true love and care was a lifesaver for me as a young girl. His smile in the halls made me feel so special and I would say he knew all of the children by name and by heart. He meant the world to my family and even came to my sister's funeral when she passed at the age of 45. A great man has passed on to rest in heaven after years of giving gifts of love and care to thousands of people, touching generations with his love. He will be missed so much and I pray for his children, grand and great grand children but know they are greater human beings because he was in their lives and will pass on his legacy of care. God bless Mr. Lipe!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Lipe. He was my Principal at Lee School from 1st-4th (Sept 68-May 72). He always smiled and knew my name and I made sure I said Hi to him when I saw him anywhere. I remember actually going to his office my last day at Lee because I knew I was moving across town. We sat and talked in his office. He had to know how sad I was. No other Principal ever remembered me like Mr. Lipe. Even today nothing but very fond memories of a truly wonderful man. RIP

Roy Lipe was a man that my sisters and I ran to when we saw him. He was always exciting but appropriate, always gentle but firm, and we loved him with all of our heart when he was principal at Lee Elementary and across the years as we saw him around town. He came to my sister's funeral in 1998 and we appreciated it. Lee was a great school under his direction. We are sad for your loss but joyful for his gain. Robin Latimer ( Johnson) and for Barbara and Liz, my sisters. Liz may write her own condolence. We considered Mr. Lipe a gentleman and a scholar.

Mr. Lipe advanced and improved the lives of those he touched -- and there were many. Personally, there was never another Mr. Lipe in my life. My condolences to the family for such a loss. I am sure I don't have to tell you how blessed we all were at a very young age to have experienced the many advantages of having a teacher who cared so much about our future. What an inspiration he was!
