Ruth Elaine Martha Secher Roschke was born to Paul and Mary Secher, November 28, 1924, in an original log house near Ft. Collins, Colorado. Her father, Paul Secher, immigrated from Denmark to the United States at age 16 with a younger brother in 1906. Ruth’s grandmother, Hedwig Meier, immigrated to the United States from Germany with her husband in 1889.
Ruth’s siblings were two brothers, Edson and Arnold, and one sister, Floranna. Ruth was schooled in eight grades at a Lutheran parochial school and four years of high school; she graduated in 1943 in the city of Corvallis, Oregon. Her parents, Paul and Mary Secher; husband, Norbert; son, Nathan; sister, Floranna; and brother, Edson preceded her in death.
Ruth and the Rev. Norbert Roschke were married October 8, 1946, in Corvallis, Oregon. They were married 57 years and were blessed with seven children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Rev. Roschke and Ruth served Lutheran churches in Denver, Colorado; Murray, Utah; Joplin, Missouri; San Angelo, Texas; Nederland, Texas; and Groves, Texas for a total of 60 years.
Ruth was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for 55 years. During that time, she was President and Treasurer and organized a group of quilters and made many quilts and 2,000 lbs. of homemade soap for Lutheran World Relief. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Altar Guild for 10 years, serving the Lord joyfully while making banners and Chrismons for the sanctuaries.
Children surviving Ruth are son, Paul Roschke and wife, Kin Ming of Bryan, Texas; son, Thomas Roschke and wife, Laura with one daughter, Lisa and husband, Vernon Vassou with son, Andre and sister, Ana; and one son, Michael Roschke all of Arlington, Virginia; son, Mark Roschke and wife, Christine with one daughter, Joanna and son, Nathaniel of Los Alamos, New Mexico; one daughter, Sarah Daugherty and her husband, Robert of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Rebecca Roschke of Port Arthur, Texas; and son, Joel Roschke and wife, Cynthia with son, Joel Craig II and two daughters, Kaitlyn and Jordan of Vidor, Texas.
The Lord took Ruth peacefully from her home with her children present on April 2, 2015, and sent for an angel to carry her soul to the heavenly realms prepared for His children.
Visitation and a funeral service will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Groves, Texas on Monday, April 6 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, April 7 at 10 a.m., respectively. Interment will be at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas.
