Sammy was born on September 24, 1946, in Port Arthur, Texas to Mary Louise Hunter and Samuel Wilson Hunter, Sr. He was a long time member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Nederland. Sammy began his career as a machinist at Neches Butane, which became Huntsman Chemical while he was there, staying on for 37 years before retiring in the early 2000’s. He was a certified grease monkey, spending a large portion of his free time in his home garage where he custom-built his iconic (to those who knew him) orange 1924 Ford T-Bucket Roadster. He could often be spotted at local hot rod meetups and car shows, or taking his T-Bucket around town for a ride. His co-workers and friends knew him as a master machinist and fabricator; one of the best in the area if not the state. There was nothing Sammy couldn’t fix or build from scratch.
Sammy had many cherished pet cats through the years, and he could often be found sitting outside feeding the neighborhood birds, squirrels, and stray cats. He was beloved by his friends, family and church members. You could always see him Saturday afternoons in mass at St. Charles, as his faith was important to him. He will be missed but not forgotten.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Mary Hunter, Sr.
Sammy is survived by his daughter Michelle Parker and son-in-law Brad Parker of Groves, Texas, son Glenn Hunter of Austin, Texas, granddaughter Caitlin Grammer and grandson-in-law Jeromie Grammer of Beaumont, Texas and grandson Colby Parker of Groves, Texas. He also left behind his last cat and little buddy, Chucky.
