Scot Allen Meents

1949 ∼ 2016

Scot Allen Meents was born on October 31, 1949 at St. Mary's Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas, and was a lifelong resident of Port Neches, TX. Scot lost his battle with cancer on September 8, 2016 at the age of 66. He attended Trinity Presbyterian Church until he left for the Navy after graduating from Port Neches Groves High School in 1968. Scot was a Port Arthur Fireman before enlisting in the Navy. He worked as an E-5 Aviation Ordinance (special & nuclear weapons) in the Navy and after his service during the Vietnam War became a draftsman. He also worked in a foundry, as a welder in a ship building company, and finally as a sheetrock installer in the Mid-County area. He loved PNG football and looked forward to each new season. He was an avid golfer until his health would not allow him to play anymore just a little over a year ago. He loved the Port Neches Park and spending time at the Neches River (visiting twice a day). He graduated from Lamar University with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts and became an avid photographer, sculptor and artist. He was a history buff, but art was his passion. Scot had several art shows, one at the Beaumont Art League just last year, and hung art several shows at the Hebert Library in Port Neches and Lamar University. He finally was able to experience selling his art and the appreciation of others loving the art he created. Scot served as the Vice President of the Beaumont Art League for the last 2 years and hung the art for shows with museum style lighting, following all the protocols established by museums he had visited all over the world. He was taught by the renowned Professor Jerry Newman at Lamar University and they became longtime friends after. Scot was predeceased by both parents, Dorothy and Wendell Meents and his sister, Margaret Toups. Scot is survived by his beloved sister, Victoria Beryl Meents Allen, and his beloved brother, Mark Douglas Meents and wife Cathy all of Houston, Texas; as well as five nephews, Rodney Crow and wife Shannon, Christopher Eagan McGullam and wife Heather both of Houston, Mitch Toups and wife of Beaumont, Andy Toups of Houston, Steven Toups and wife Dette of Beaumont; five nieces, Rachel Meents and Lauren Meents of Houston, Wendy Toups, Susie Toups of Beaumont and Janet Toups of New York; eight great nieces & nephews and one great, great niece. He is also survived by his cousins, Timothy Ludwig and wife Reggie of Tennessee; Steven Ludwig and wife June of Oklahoma; Debra Collins and husband Allen of Houston, Phillip Allen and wife Noressa of Port Neches, and Brady Allen, MD of Dallas and many other family and very close friends. Scot loved his family and friends. He was a loyal friend. Working with Scott at the Beaumont Art League was so enlightening. Scott was a great source of art information and was such an asset to our organization. He curated and hung shows when we knew he was feeling very ill but insisted on doing the job like only he could do it. So sorry to lose him as a friend and exceptional artist and teacher.

We'll miss Scot terribly here at the Port Neches Library. His showings never failed to be heaped with praise from the public and he was a genuine pleasure to visit with whenever he came in. We were honored to host one of his Carravagio showings as his last exhibition here. Our prayers and sympathies go out to his family and many friends.

Scot and I became the best of buddies when I was in the 6th or seventh grade. We were neighbors first, then grew up through junior high and high school as the closest of friends, surfing weekends at the beach or Galveston, double dating through high school, sharing an apartment together in Port Arthur for a short while before I went into the Army and Scot went into the Navy. He traveled to visit me in NC and in DC. Over the years we lost contact but just 5 years or so ago we reconnected. After spending hours on the phone, (thanks to Vicki putting us back in touch with each other), we caught up with the decades and once again became the closest of friends. He was a world class artist, and his works are displayed proudly in my home. He was exceptionally well-read and could converse on any topic. Our world is a sadder place without him, but thank goodness I will see him in eternity when it's my time, and that is good news. Rest in Peace Dear Friend.
