Shirley Mae Dement (nee Haydel) was born on December 12, 1930, in New Orleans, LA, to the loving parents Katherine and Roger Haydel. Shirley’s life journey took her to Port Arthur, where she dedicated many years to bookkeeping in the local area.
As she embraced her golden years, Shirley found comfort and companionship at the Calderwood Retirement Community. Her faith played a significant role in her life, and she was an active member of Groves First United Methodist Church, where she found solace and camaraderie.
Shirley’s compassionate spirit led her to volunteer with the United Board of Missions for an inspiring 27 years. During this time, she selflessly extended her hand to help others, finding great joy in making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
Shirley’s life was beautifully intertwined with that of her beloved husband, Marvin Raye Dement, whom she shared 65 years of marital bliss until his passing. Together, they were blessed with two children, Brooks Cima (Dennis) of La Porte and Mark Dement (Jovita) of La Belle. Shirley’s love and devotion extended to her four cherished grandchildren, Mindy Valle (Leo), Erin Willey (Joe), Caitlin Cima (Scott Beggs), and Derick Dement (Michele). She was also delighted by the presence of her seven great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Lee, Jack, Josie, Tallulah, Joaquin, and Winnie.
A visitation to honor Shirley’s memory will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the same location, followed by a graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that friends and loved ones consider making memorial contributions to the United Board of Missions at 6650 9th Avenue, Port Arthur, TX 77642, or to a charity close to their hearts.
Shirley Mae Dement’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will forever be cherished by those whose lives she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.
