Shirley McCowan

Shirley L. McCowan, born on May 22, 1935, in Winnfield, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, in Houston, Texas. She was a longtime resident of Nederland, TX, residing there for over 65 years. A devoted educator and beloved family member, Shirley dedicated a remarkable 31 years of her career to teaching 4th grade at Sabine Pass Independent School District, where she cherished not only the craft of teaching but the enduring friendships she formed throughout her years of service.

Shirley graduated from Winnfield High School and furthered her education at Lamar University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. She continued her studies at Stephen F. Austin University, obtaining a master's degree in education. Her passion for teaching and commitment to her students shaped countless lives and left an indelible mark on her community.

Throughout her life, Shirley loved traveling extensively with her husband, Dempsey, in their motorhome. Together, they explored almost every state in the U.S., including two memorable trips to Alaska. In addition to her love for travel, Shirley found joy in sewing and crafting, creating cherished items for her family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her children, John Violette of Houston, TX; Cathy Rowan of Spring, TX; and Pattie Laxton of Syracuse, NY. She took great pride in her grandchildren, who include Haley Whatley and her husband Tommy Whatley of Hamshire, TX; Susan Laxton of Buffalo, NY; Ken Laxton of Beaumont, TX; Derek Laxton of Syracuse, NY; Amy Laxton of Skaneateles, NY; Andy Rowan of Chanute, KS; and Dalton Rowan of Spring, TX. Additionally, Shirley was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Madison Bundick and Blake Bundick of Hamshire, TX. Shirley will be missed by her brother, Randy Sanders of Ruston, LA.

Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dempsey McCowan; her parents, Dewitt and Estelle Sanders; her brothers, Rip Sanders and Ralph Sanders; her sisters, Willa Dee LaForme and Beverly Doucet; and her daughter, Debbie Violette.

The family of Shirley extends their heartfelt gratitude to May Cole and her staff at Autumn Years Assisted Living in Houston, who provided exemplary care during Shirley’s time with them. The love and respect shown to Shirley and her fellow residents was a source of comfort to her family.

A visitation will be held on January 21, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland, Texas, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas.

Shirley L. McCowan will be remembered fondly for her unwavering dedication to her career, her adventurous spirit, and her deep affection for her family and friends. Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
