Stanley George Newsome Jr.

1939 ∼ 2023

Stanley “George” Newsome Jr went home to be with the Lord on February 17, 2023.

George was born in Groves, TX on January 27, 1939, to Stanley and Sybil Newsome. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1957 and went on to serve as Petty Officer 3rd Class for the Seabees in the US Navy aboard the USS Tanner. After his service to his country was complete, he attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX and graduated in 1966 with a degree in Civil Engineering. While in college, he worked for Texaco loading box cars. He went on to work for Charles R. Haile Associates, Inc. in Texas City, during which time he met the love of his life, Martha. George and Martha came back to Groves where he worked as City Engineer/Director of Public Works for the City of Groves until his retirement in 2004. After retirement, he went to work with his good friend Anthony Leger at Soutex Surveyors and Engineers.

George was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed taking his family and friends on dove hunts and fishing trips. He was also involved in many civic organizations including Port Arthur Rotary, Knights of Columbus, Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce, Groves Chamber of Commerce, Finance Committee at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Arthur Education Foundation, 2nd Saturday Dinner Club, The Commodores, and the America Legion. Although George was an only child, he made sure he wouldn’t be lonely in his adult years. He had 5 children and along with their children and their children’s children, he left a long family line in his wake. He loved his family and enjoyed taking everyone to dinner and celebrating birthdays and holidays with his children and grandchildren. He even would go to the schools on random days to eat lunch with the kids throughout the years. He always made sure everyone was taken care of. But the most magical was his love for Martha, his wife of 53 years. He put her above all and set the bar for his daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters on how a woman should be treated. He never met a stranger and would treat everyone the same whether prince or pauper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Elizabeth McBride and son George Michael Newsome.

He is survived by his wife Martha Newsome; Daughters Theresa Donaghy and husband John of Winnie, TX and Ginger Bitter of San Antonio, TX; Son William Newsome and girlfriend Heather Bearden of Beaumont, TX; son in law Vaughn McBride of Winnie, TX and daughter in law Diane Newsome of Sour Lake, TX; Grandchildren: Danielle Badgett and husband Matthew of Nederland, TX; Jeremy Dixon of Port Neches, TX; Kristopher McBride and wife Andrea of Winnie, TX; Daine Holievina of Winnie. TX; Jessica Miller and husband Andrew of Sour Lake, TX; Michayla Davis and husband Chance of Sour Lake, TX; George “Michael” Newsome and fiancé Annah Riley of Sour Lake, TX; Michael McCown of Winnie, TX. Great Grandchildren: Kennedy and Drake Badgett; Keyan and Killian Dixon; Spencer and Leo McBride; Braylon McAnally; Denom Holievina; Karter and Kamryn Davis; Mason and Waylon Miller

He was a rare soul and there aren’t many people left like him in this world, to know him was a treasure.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.

I miss George so much already. He was a patriarch of the SOUTEX family. His greeting everyday was "how are you and what's your temperature this morning". We laughed a lot. I am regretful that I didn't memorize or write down all his JOKES he had for us. He always had a story for us "yougens", which made us all realize the many careers he had lived and the people he touched along the way as a friend, buddy, brilliant engineer, co-worker, endless supporter of all our Cities and Jefferson County development. We were all blessed to be in the long lived path of George Newsome, if even for a moment.Much Love to Martha and the whole family!Stacey Garza, "Blond headed Billing Lady" Office Specialist, SOUTEX

George was a gracious man who loved his family. Our paths crossed from time to time working together on engineering projects, donating time to the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce, and of course a dove hunt. he was a well respected engineer, volunteer and active in his church. I will miss hearing his stories, his humor and his kind heart for everyone he met. My sincere condolences to his family. Ron Arceneaux

One of THE nicest guys I ever met. Whenever I had a drainage problem in Groves, he got someone on it fast. R.I.P. Old Friend.

George was a wonderful man, a great man. He had such a loving and jovial personality that was contagious and so accepting that all around him always felt comfortable. I will truly miss his antics, but I have no doubts that he is in the loving arms of our Savior and continues to spread joy.

Martha, I am saddened by the loss of George. He was one amazing man with a heart of gold. He was so easy to work for, was always in a happy mood and just loved his job. I'm gonna miss hearing that voice, "Hey girl". Heaven has gained an amazing angel. RIP George
