Valerye "Val" Edward Rose

1939 ∼ 2024

Valerye "Val" Edward Rose, 84, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at his home in Nederland, Texas. Born on December 7, 1939, in Port Arthur, Texas, Val dedicated his life to music and teaching, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate for generations.

Val’s love for music began early in his childhood and remained constant throughout his life. He graduated from S.F. Austin High School in 1957 and then earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in music from Stephen F. Austin State University. While attending SFASU he met Suzi, the love of his life.

While still a college student, he began his career as a part time Texas band director at the Gary and Joaquin schools. His first full time job after graduation was at Moore Junior High in Tyler. This was followed by successful stays at Overton, Troup, and Jacksonville High School. In 1986 Val moved to Nederland as Director of Bands, where he taught for the next fourteen years.

His commitment to education did not end with his retirement in May 2000 as the Director of Bands and Music Education; it continued at home, where he proudly passed on his musical knowledge to his son and grandson, both of whom followed in his footsteps as band directors. Val's impact on the lives of his students and family is a testament to his enduring spirit and love for people and music.

Val was not only a teacher but also a mentor, always available to provide support and encouragement to those in need. He could repair almost anything and enjoyed tinkering with projects around the house. He was an avid reader, and he loved solving crossword puzzles and watching football on the weekends.

Val is survived by his son, Greg Rose and his wife Weena of Nederland, Texas; his daughter, Shannon Shipp of Gladewater, Texas; and son-in-law, John Shipp. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Eric Rose and his wife Carly; Amber Shupp and her husband Patrick; and Zachary Shipp.

He also leaves behind his beloved dog Charlie, who remained a constant source of companionship for Val, especially after the passing of his wife.

Val was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita (Barnes) Rose and Frank P. Rose; his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Suzanne “Suzi” Grow Rose; as well as his siblings, Alberta “Lolly” Darnall, Frank P. Rose, Jr., and Gladys Whiteley. The family would like to give a special thank you to Southeast Texas Home Care, Karla, Meko, Maranda, Chaneille, and Intrepid Hospice for the love and care they provided to Val and his family.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 7, 2024, at The Nederland Performing Arts Center.  Followed by the Celebration of Val's Life at 2:15 p.m., at The Nederland High School Band Hall, located at 2101 N. 18th St., Nederland, Texas 77627.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Val and Suzi Rose Memorial Scholarship Fund, at Neches Credit Union; 2623 Nederland Ave., Nederland, Texas 77627. Please reference to account #3208439.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Val will remember him not only for his contributions to music education, but also for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering compassion. His legacy shines brightly through the memories he leaves behind, a love that will remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and students.

The last time I saw Mr. Mr. Rose (as my friends and I called him in high school) was at a Nederland home football game before the pandemic. Although he had lost his wife, who I remembered as being so beautiful and gentle, he was still very funny, quick, and smart - the way those Roses tend to be. People in Southeast Texas - "the natives" as we sometimes used to joke in the band about the audiences at football games - can be loud or express opinions that are factually incorrect or can make endless demands without giving basic respect in return, but sometimes you get people like Val who quietly command respect and encourage their students and those who they come in contact with to be better versions of themselves. They don't make 'em like that anymore, I sometimes think. I'm grateful to have been taught by and to have been friends with (Shoutout Amber) such a lineage

I did not get to share a lot of time with Val, but he was always an influence upon the band world in East Texas. He will always be remembered as a "Classic".

Mr. Rose was my band director in Jacksonville. I was so proud to be in that band and to have him as our director! I now live in White Oak and understand that he came here when he left Jacksonville and turned the White Oak music program around! I’ll never forget him!

I was very fortunate to follow Val as band director at Jacksonville High School. His success with the band program there created a culture of excellence and personal achievement that showed in his students then and in later years. He proved to be a fine mentor to many band directors – including me. Both of his children, Greg and Shannon, were fine players in my band and became great teachers and friends of my family. Val will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched. Bob Parsons, Austin, Texas

Mr. Rose was the most influential teacher I’ve ever had, and his support and belief in us went beyond just teaching music. I have never forgotten what he has meant to me.

I simply do not possess the words to express how I feel. Words are simple, limited and static. Music is the only vocabulary our emotions understand. I cannot adequately articulate how I feel about my wife, but listen to Host's “Venus” and you’ll know exactly. “Ballde” from Sibelius’ Kirelia Suite after the passing of my best friend. The Canadian Brass’s “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” encapsulates the life of my grandfather. Tyler Bates “What Must a King Do” transports me back to the birth of my youngest daugher. Music is a time machine that can bring me back to precious moments and memories; Music is the vehicle that carries me through times of sadness and grief. Music is as close to God a mortal will get while on Earth. Ravel, Shostakovich, Gershwin, Elfman and many MANY others have all become part of my language. It started simply with a recording of Holst - The Planets given to me by Mr. Rose my senior year. It grew from conversations after classes about music and composers to playing Dvořák’s Overture Carnival after his annual Senior Barbecue. Those moments are still resonate in my life today. I was far from a model student, but Mr. Rose recognized that I had an appetite, that my mind was fertile enough that the seed would grow and flourish. A good teacher teaches the lesson, but a great teacher leaves an impact. The massive impact Mr. Rose has left on my life has affected, influenced, and enhanced nearly every single moment truly enriching my life on such a deep level that I cannot articulate. I cannot express my gratitude for what those simple acts have done. I can only listen to Beethoven’s 9th, quite loudly with tears streaming down my face and whisper “Thank You.”

Mr Rose was my band director at NHS in the late 80s. I'll never forget what a kind, gentle soul he had and I'm so thankful for having him and his light in my life back then. Go to your reward in glory, Mr. Rose. Thank you for sharing your love and light!

My deepest condolences to your family. Mr. Rose was my high school band director. Mr. Rose was tough as nails but with a heart of gold. He was a great mentor who taught discipline and expected nothing short of excellence from his students. Being part of the NHS Band was the absolute best part of my high school days. Thank you, Mr. Rose, for your leadership, example, mentorship, and encouragement! You will be dearly missed!

Remembering Val when he was in Jacksonville. Such a wonderful person and great band director. Our students had much love and respect for him. Also, during this time, My pleasure was getting to know Suzi . Loved her sweet smile. And I had the privilege of teaching Greg as a young fellow in the 3rd grade and a few years later, Shannon as a cute little lst grade girl. Both well behaved and good students. My love to each of them and their families. Treasure your memories. Be

Val Rose was a good and unique man. I had the privilege of knowing him as I taught and coached in the Dome when Val was NHS band director. His students loved and respected him. They looked sharp marching on the field and their music was wonderful. Val left a legacy of his love for music to many people. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him .

Nederland has been priviliged to have had a Legacey of 3 generations of the Rose family as band directors. Val will be missed , but as a father n mentor he set the mark for his son, grandson n asst band directors who worked with him. Respected and honored by his peers in the band community, Val was still influencing young band members after he retired. What more could you ask of a gentleman who was a class act from the day he decided to share his love for music with a younger generation. Thank you, It was an honor to know you Mr Rose.

I am so, so, so sorry to hear this. I have so many fond memories of Val and Suzi from over the years, from when our two families spent time together between school years all the way to when I worked with Val at Tatum Music. So much joy from knowing all of you and incredible sadness for your loss. I know my Mom and Dad and Suzi are with him in Heaven now and celebrating all the good times had together over the years with so many band-director families.

Val was one of the first people I met when I came to Texas in 1981. His guidance and mentorship through all these years has been so important to me. He touched so many lives and will be missed by all. See you again, Val.
Chris Demeter August 30, 2024
He was always talked about as an imposing man before joining the high school band, but that description was not who he was at all. Val was approachable and wiling to listen. He made after school marching practice and summer band practices enjoyable for the two years that I was there with him as director. Val will be missed and I hope he finds comfort again with his wife and other family members who went before him. Rest in peace!

It's been 20+ years since I'd last spoken to Mr. Rose... probably not long after his retirement from NHS. Life happens. I moved and lost touch, though I always thought back on that time fondly. Upon hearing the news of his passing, I revisited years of interactions with him in my mind. Many people are now doing the same, relaying those memories through social media. It is clear they are good memories, from a formative time in our lives back when we were more malleable... the "band kids". He clearly left his impression on us and I am happy to discover that I still bear impressions of him, even after so long. I hope he's found peace.
