Vernon Harwood Ferguson passed from this life on September 13, 2015 surrounded by his loving family and friends after a lengthy illness at home in Groves, Texas. Vernon was born on Thursday October 23, 1930 in Fairland, Texas to parents Sam Riley Ferguson, Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Tumlinson Ferguson. Vernon had 5 brothers, Lee David, Deward Riley, Dewey Lyndon, Sam Riley Jr., Larry Riley, and 2 sisters, Katherine Elizabeth and Beulah May. Sam Sr., Deward, L.D., Sam Jr. and Lyndon were all in the army with Lyndon dying for his country in Vietnam. Vernon was the only brother who choose to join the Navy, being honorably discharged on February 16, 1956. Vernon worked a few years for Brown & Root around Austin, Texas coming to Houston to get a job with Rohm & Haas in Deer Park. He retired from there after 35 years to open a Christmas tree farm in Hankamer which he managed for many years where he continued his friendship with many ex-coworkers from the plant talking about the good old days along with developing new friends who came for years to cut their Christmas trees. Vernon finally retired from the Christmas tree business, moved to Anahuac and finally moved to Groves, Texas. Vernon was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers, Deward and Lyndon and one sister, Katherine and one son, Steve Sparrow. Vernon is survived by his wife of 27 years, Doris of Groves, Texas; Michael and Rhonda Ferguson of Baytown, Texas; Scott and Susie Ferguson of La Porte, Texas; Steve and Laurie Ferguson of Deer Park, Texas; Mark and Kim Ferguson Adams of Lumberton, Texas; Denise Sparrow Trimble and Mike Sparrow of Groves, Texas; 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Vernon was a faithful Member of the White's Park Church of Christ in Anahuac where he was an elder for a few years before his health started to decline, then moving to Groves when he was called home. Vernon was always willing to talk with anyone, anywhere about the Lord so that they too could know and obey the Father on high, receiving an incorruptible crown promised to all Saints. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves with Mark Adams and Don Swanson officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
