Virginia Lee "Jennie" Bell Brewer

February 7, 1921 — November 27, 2017

Virginia Lee "Jennie" Bell Brewer, 96, of Groves, Texas passed away Monday, November 27, 2017 in Humble, Texas. Jennie was born February 7, 1921 in Fred, Texas to Edward and Emme Hutto Bell. She was the youngest of six siblings who all preceded her in death. Jennie and her husband Jimmie, who preceded her in death in Nov. 2016, were married over 73 years. They enjoyed a vegetable garden and flowers until just a few years ago and shared everything they grew. She also canned vegetables and jellies and made blackberry cobblers. If you were lucky enough to receive a jar of mayhaw jelly, returning the jar was a must for a refill. She enjoyed cooking for her family and would often ask what she could make for you. Her fried chicken and pork chops, dressing, gumbo and chicken tortilla dish were sure favorites. Even into her mid-90s she enjoyed baking brownies for family, friends and neighbors. Jennie was a member of First United Methodist Church of Groves where she served on several committees over the years and sang in the choir until her eyesight prevented her from participating. Jennie took up painting in the 80s and was quite good. Her children and grandchildren have her artwork proudly displayed in their homes. Jennie liked staying up late and more importantly, sleeping late. During some of those late nights, she would often speak on the phone with her longtime friend, Louise. You could call her as late as midnight and she would be happy to hear from you but please dont call her before 10 a.m.! Big or small, she loved all her grand dogs. Her dachshund, Tuesday, always stayed by her side and was a great comfort to her this past year. Jennie proudly supported her family while they were members of the Purple Pride band and Indianettes drill team. She continued to attend PN-G football games, as she could, until just last year when she often cheered on the Indians by listening to their games on the radio. Jennie loved watching football and baseball whether high school, college or professional. Jennie also liked watching the Astros. She would have been thrilled knowing they won the World Series. Her favorite sport to actually play was basketball. She played on her Spurger High School basketball team. She worked and played basketball for Texaco. The Texaco CC girls were part of the Port Arthur City Womens league and they won the City Championship in 1943 and 1944. One year for Mothers day, the family bought her a basketball goal, basketball and tennis shoes. Everyone enjoyed playing H-O-R-S-E with her. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves with Reverend Marty Boddie officiating. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 4, 2017 at Memory Gardens Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be Saturday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. She is survived by two daughters, Julie Ann Brewer and Barbara Jo Entrekin and husband Paul, two grandchildren, Bryan Entrekin and Jill Entrekin Lane and husband John B. Lane, IV, two great grandchildren, Travis Lane and Ariel Parker and husband Aaron, great-great grandsons Zane and Jasper Parker. The family would like to thank the loving caregivers who helped take such good care of her after her husbands passing: Elvira, Joanie and Leslie. She was a very dear, loving and kind lady. Those that had the pleasure of knowing her will miss her dearly.
