Walter Edward (Sonny) White of Custer City, Oklahoma was born on July 24, 1954 to Walter White and Grace McGee White in Port Arthur. He left this life on October 21, 2017, at the age of 64.
Sonny was a member of a large family which included 9 girls and 2 boys. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carolyn. Sonny is survived by his brother, David White (Belinda) of Clinton, SC; sisters, Barbara Bartlett (Melvin) of Port Arthur, Elizabeth Albers, Marjorie Goomda and Betty White all of Nederland, Judith Bergman of Yukon, OK, Marilyn Watson of Crosby, Karen Gladsen (Michael) of Baudette, MN and Jeanne Stogdill (Al) of Chappell Hills and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews and many wonderful dear friends.
Sonny spent the first part of his life in Nederland, where he raised and trained springer spaniels. He later moved to Oklahoma where he worked at Fred Jones Mfg. in Oklahoma City and Walmart in Yukon. Since 2009, he was employed at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Clinton. He was in Oklahoma at the time of the bombing of the Murrah Building and was an active participant in the clean-up which followed. This had a profound effect on him and was a life altering experience.
Sonny has been described as a “dear friend” and a “kind man” by friends and co-workers. He was a kind and gentle soul who loved others deeply. He had a special place in his heart for children and for his clients at the Veterans Center.
There will be a gathering of family and friends on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 2:00 p.m. at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland. The interment will be at Memory Gardens in Nederland.
