Wiley Matthew Shifflett, known as “Wally” to his family and friends, was a man of remarkable spirit and dedication. Wally passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, in Port Arthur, Texas, at the age of 74. Born on July 3, 1950, in Levelland, Texas, he was a son to the late Lawrence and Mae Shifflett, who instilled in him a strong sense of values and a love for life.

Wally enjoyed a diverse career. Primarily working as a certified welder in various phases of the oilfield, but also worked on drilling rigs when the oilfield dictated the demand.

Wally 0riginally tried his hand as a business owner in the oilfield where he engineered and designed his own drilling rig systems. His proudest accomplishments included obtaining two patents for innovative contributions to the oilfield, specifically for his Ryan Mud/Gas Separator and Damon's Tool. His robust work ethic and tenacity were instrumental in his success. He exemplified perseverance, not only in his profession but also in his personal endeavors.

In his youth, Wally was celebrated for his prowess as a football star at Wink high school in west Texas. Where held the bench press record for decades and was an all-state running back for 2 years in a row. A true testament to his speed and skills, Wally was awarded a full scholarship to Sul Ross University for his athletic ability. Wally harbored a deep passion for the outlaw culture. Often sharing tales and history of the cowboys of the Old West with his sons. His love for the Old West history resonated throughout his life. Shaping his morals and values while inspiring those around him.

Wally's commendable service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war from 1969 to 1972, further defined his character. His decorations, metals and badges included National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Metal and Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16). He carried the experiences of this time with him, sharing stories that reflected his pride and patriotism. 

Wally is survived by his beloved sons, Ryan Matthew Shifflett and his wife, Natalee of Anahuac, and Damon Russell Shifflett and his wife, Sheryl of Texas City. The joy of his life was reflected in his grandchildren: Ashley, Cody, Madison, Raven, and Chloe, as well as his great-grandchildren: Liam, Lennon, Luna, Stella, and Rosalie, who brought him immense happiness. He is also mourned by his sister, Mary Franklin, and her husband, Norman, along with his brother, Lawrence Joe Shifflett.  He is also survived by 30 great nieces and nephews.

Wally was predeceased by parents, Lawrence and Mae Shifflett and his grandson, Jacob Ryan Shifflett. Along with his sisters Iva Lee Murphy and Birdie Nell Lee, one brother Lloyd Bruce Shifflett, one niece Dianna Berrett, 2 nephews James Lee junior and Levi Decker. The indelible mark of Wally's life will continue to resonate through the cherished memories held by his family, whose lives he touched with his warmth, humor, and unwavering spirit.
