William Clyde McAlum

1941 ∼ 2024

William Clyde McAlum, 82, of Nederland, Texas passed away on May 16, 2024, at Jefferson Nursing Home in Beaumont, Texas with his loving grandchildren at his side.

William was born on June 14,1941, in Alamo, Georgia to Hilton and Ruby Sumner McAlum.  He was a proud Army Veteran with over twenty-three years served until he retired as a Sargeant Major with the Military Police. After serving two tours in Vietnam and being stationed around the world, he continued a long career earning several honors, including the Bronze Star. Serving his country was one of his proudest accomplishments in life.  After retiring from the Army, William ventured into the private security sector and relocated to Albuquerque, NM, where he met some of his closest life-long friends. He was heavily involved in his community and lived a socially active life, where he and Gloria were usually at the country club or enjoying a night out dancing with friends.  Anyone would attest that he was a family man and loved spending time with his daughters, step-kids and grandkids. Although his daughters lived in Florida, he talked of them often and loved their visits. A few of his favorite hobbies included golfing, making his famous BBQ ribs at his Rhythm and Blues party's and people watching from a lawn chair in the front yard. He was very close to his grandkids and some of their fondest memories were; Lauren remembers him always giving her total artistic control when decorating their Christmas tree every year, making a joke she would always have total control. Jessica remembers riding around town in his red convertible and him doing seatbelt checks (check 1, 2, 3) on them. William was an avid runner, something he took credit for getting his granddaughter, Amber into. She remembers running with him from an early age of only five. Austin, which he called "son, or happy Mulrine" spent numerous hours throwing a football with him, even later in life when he had to sit and throw the ball from a chair.  He also taught Austin at a young age to golf with him so he could always have someone to play a "round" with. Their "Papa" was often seen at their basketball games, on the sidelines of their soccer fields, along the cross-country route of a race or at a high school football game where he sat near the band and cheered the drumline on as he always supported everything they did, including years of Boy Scout meetings. His grandkids named him the “Big Kahuna” because he was expressive and carefree. He loved being outdoors and spent many hours with family planting and yielding gardens and considered himself to be quite the master farmer. Papa was also known for singing and dancing with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout their lives. Additionally, he loved sitting outside telling stories about growing up on the farm in Georgia and about his time in the military.

Survivors include the love of his life, his wife of thirty-eight years, Gloria Narducci Gengo McAlum of Nederland, Tx; his brother Harry McAlum of South Carolina, and his sister, Linda Burke of Georgia; his daughters, Lisa McAlum and Shauna Ramirez and her husband Roberto all of Florida; step-daughter, Mistie Gengo of Nederland, Tx; daughter-in-law, Christina Gengo of Nederland, Tx; grandchildren, Lauren Perez and husband Henry of Groves,Tx, Jessica Hunt and her husband Josh of Houston, Tx,  Amber Hoffman and wife Julie of Houston, Tx,  Austin Mulrine of Nederland, Tx and Charlie Gengo of Nederland, Tx; great grandchildren, Harper Perez of Groves, Tx, Rowan Hunt of Houston, Tx, Olivier Perez of Groves, Tx, Riley Hoffman and Blake Hoffman both of Houston, Tx.William was preceded in death by his parents, Hilton and Ruby Sumner; his brothers Robert McAlum and Don McAlum; his stepson, Damon Gengo and his great-granddaughter, Eliana Perez.  A gathering of family and friends for visitation will take place from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, at Melancon-Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland with services to follow at 4:00 p.m.  A Military Graveside Rites ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston under the direction of Melancon-Levingston Funeral Home.  Honorary Pall Bearers are Austin Mulrine, Charlie Gengo, Henry Perez, Lauren Perez, Wilson Sam, Amber Hoffman, Julie Hoffman and Jessica Hunt and Slade Strickland.

Bill (Mac) was one of our father Jim Doyle’s best friends. Mac was such a loving, kind, genuine, caring person…. always with a smile on his face…..who truly cared about others. My Daddy Jim met Mac in Albuquerque and soon became golfing partners and the best of friends. They met every evening at Baker Street Pub/Horse and Angel (along with so many of their other buddies including Joe Willis, Billy Knight, Ray Fort just to name a few) and laugh and tell stories until the sun went down. Mac introduced his beautiful wife Gloria to our beautiful Momma Georgia and the relationship was complete. They truly became our extended family and would do anything for each other. We know Daddy greeted Mac with open arms when he went to heaven that day and they’re probably golfing and telling jokes all over again over a Miller lite, as we speak. Thank you for touching our lives Mac. We love you and you will truly be missed.

Never have I considered this man a "stepdad". Bill came into my life my Senior year of high school and I came to love him thru the years for his large kind heart, his love of life and dancing, his delicious BBQ ribs, his business savvy tips, his love of my children, and his never-ending love for me. I went thru 8 years of adversity and this man drove countless hours in the middle of the night looking for me when cocaine had me hostage. Sure, he would get angry, but he NEVER gave up on the real Mistie coming back. He has bailed me from jail, rescued me from abusive men and loved me thru the darkness. He helped raise my children as his own and gave me stability I never realized I needed. Don't get me wrong, he could show his behind and act a fool, but I never doubted his love for me or my family. He could have easily walked away from the chaos I bombarded his life with, but instead he stood by my mother's side and continued being our pillar of strength. I love him so much that when I married, hec walked me 1/2 way and my dad walked me 1/2 way down the aisle... that should sum it up! Papa Mac was on hospice a year, but we are never prepared for the rush of grief and emotions we get .. I am already missing his wit and charm. He loved his Miller lite, but that was replaced by Pepsi zero a few years ago. He also demanded we bring him Rolo's to the nursing home on our visits. Dementia got him, but he never forgot about his sweets. He retired after serving 23 as Army Military Police and was awarded the presidential Bronze Star after 2 tours to Vietnam. He loved to run, grill, golf and garden. Please pray for my kiddos, they were VERY close...also my mom is grieving. They were married 38 yrs. He would have been 83 next month! I love you Papa and treasure our special bond. Rest in peace.

Holy Father, Eternal and Almighty God, we ask you for Uncle Bill, whom you called from this world. Give him happiness, light and peace. May he, having passed through death, participate in eternal light with the saints, as you promised Abraham and his descendants. May his soul suffer no more, and deign to resurrect him with the saints on the day of resurrection and reward. Forgive his sins and wash away their stains so that he may reach immortal life with you in the eternal kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

My Brother-in-law Bill was a very charming Man. He never met a stranger and when he spoke his voice was very clear and deep, I loved hearing him talk. I will always remember how much he loved Lays Potato Chips and the look on his face when I would drive him and Gloria to the VA Hospital for his check ups, I would always bring him Lays Potato Chips. Bill was a Gentleman and a very Generous Man and I will miss him very much. Rest in Peace Bill and enjoy running, playing golf, dancing and listening to your favorite music! I love you Bill.
