Winifred "Winnie" Stelly Fondren

1941 ∼ 2026

Winifred  "Winnie" Stelly Fondren, 84, of Port Neches, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2026. She was born on April 25, 1941, in Port Neches, where she spent her life deeply rooted in family, faith, and service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Olee and Iree Stelly; her sister, Eugenia; and her brother, Ray.

Winnie graduated from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in 1962 and devoted nearly four decades to her profession as a registered nurse. She took particular pride in her work caring for cardiac patients and was known for her skill, steadiness, and attention to detail. Nursing was not simply her career, but a calling that shaped the way she lived her life. She worked from 1962 until her retirement in 1999, when she chose to leave the profession in order to care for her youngest granddaughter, continuing her lifelong role as caregiver in anew way.

She married her husband, Charles Fondren, in March 1962, and together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and faith. Winnie was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Port Neches, where she faithfully taught Sunday School for many years and served on numerous church committees throughout her life. Her commitment to her church reflected her quiet dedication to service and her belief in showing up consistently for others.

Beyond her professional and church life, Winnie was known for her many talents and her high standards. She was a gifted quilter and seamstress, an excellent cook, and a meticulous perfectionist in all she undertook. She took great pride in her home and garden and was known for her strong work ethic, competitive spirit, and determination. Whether caring for her family, making something by hand, or tending to daily responsibilities, she approached everything with purpose and care.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Charles Fondren; daughters, Gina Sexton and Beth Carson (Kit); granddaughters, Lindsey Castille, Laura Campbell (Zach), Meredith Carson (Matlin), and Jane Sweeney (Alex); and great-granddaughters, Kaycee Castille, and Averie and Rylie Campbell.

Beyond her many roles and accomplishments, Winnie will be remembered for the quiet, steady way she cared for those around her. A nurse in every season of life, she brought patience, capability, and devotion to her family, her home, and her community. Her legacy lives on through the generations she helped shape and the many lives touched by her example of service and care.

Winnie was one of the first friends I made when we moved to Nederland in 2020. She had this energy, this purpose, this love of life that was irresistible. Although I had only a short time with her, I will never forget her and look forward to seeing her again one day..

Winnie and I were classmates at Hotel Dieu School of nursing 1959-1962. We became very close friends soon after meeting. Winnie was the one member of the class that could keep us laughing through the worst and hardest times. I found nursing school brutal as far as our schedule, but Winnie never let it get her down. She was an excellent student, and continued this excellence into her career. You will always be in my heart, Winnie, never forgotten, always loved. RIP my friend until we meet again.

Winnie and her husband Charles were the first close friends that we had in Port Neches. Our relationship became stronger as years passed. Their girls were very important in the lives of our two older children. Both of our girls became part of the medical profession just like Winnie's girls. Winnie's example of service in her profession as well as every other aspect of her life is indeed a high standard. I loved her like a sister and shared many confidences with her. I will miss her, but I find comfort knowing her battle with pain is over, and she will rest in peace and comfort of her Lord and Savior forever..
