Zachary Mills Scalf

1981 ∼ 2022

Zachary Mills Scalf

Zachary Mills Scalf, 41, of Port Neches, Texas passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.

Zachary was born on April 24, 1981, in Port Arthur, Texas to Deborah Mills Scalf and Dempsey James Scalf. Zac loved to travel, tinker with his Jeep and motorcycle; playing Fantasy Football with his friends and body building. Zachary was a loud, adventurous, caring man. He cherished our mom deeply, adored our dad and his two precious daughters were his world. Zac served 4 ½ years in the United States Army, 10th Mountain Division. Zac cared for his brothers in arms endlessly and was passionate about helping fellow Vets. He was immensely proud of graduating from Texas A&M, following in his Grandfather’s footsteps.

Zachary accomplished much in his 41 years, including running for President in Vermont during the 2020 election…sadly he didn’t win the Presidency. He gruffly loved each and every one of his cousins, nephews and nieces. He was the oldest grandkid and he reveled in that, deeming himself “the favorite”. Zac loved each and every one of his friends so very much. From the “Floating Turd” high school days, to his N’Sync buddies in college. He loved his extra brothers. His presence will be so greatly missed and there will be forever be a missing part in our family. If there was one thing Zac was known for it would simply be, “he never met a stranger”!! He loved everyone and everyone loved him.

Zachary leaves behind his two precious daughters, Sophia Scalf and Vivian Scalf; parents, Dempsey and Deborah Scalf of Port Neches; brother, Aaron Scalf and his wife Stacey of Port Orchard, Washington; sister, Jillian Scalf Frost and her husband Adam of Port Neches; grandmother, Barbara Mills of Port Neches; aunts, Stephanie Cowart of Nederland and Lisa Pilkington and her husband Kevin of Houston; nephews, Zander Frost, Tristan Scalf and his niece, Ashton Scalf.

Zachary is preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack Mills; Paul and Geraldine Scalf; his uncle Gar Cowart and nephew, Noah Frost.

A visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Melancon Funeral Home in Nederland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Nederland. Private family cremation services will take place at a later date.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Anthony Fasano, David Green, Rich Landry, Justin Stewart, Ryan Wood and Ryan Rivera.

In lieu of flowers, “Memorial Contributions” can be made to Deborah Scalf in memory of Zachary for the college fund of his two daughters, Sophia and Vivian.

Zac Scalf was simply an unforgettable person. My fondest memories of him were in HHC 2-14 infantry, Ft. Drum, NY. I would be dressed in my old school Army Greens walking down the hallway looking sharp and a young Zac Scalf would be heading my way looking equally squared away. I would smirk and nod as Zac would pass by I would simply tell him to go and "Scalf himself". He would reply telling me to "Scalf off" both of us smirking and going on to do what the chain of command asked of us for the day. An entire interchange wrapped up in two phrases. A clever way to show affection, without showing affection, in what can be a cold and demanding lifestyle. One where feelings and emotions need to be tucked away so that we can plug into the machine and make it better. My good friend and brother in arms found away to fashion his surname in our minds as an adjective, a noun, a verb or whatever it needed to be at the time to bring a moment of levity. A brief escape from is a highly stress full and competitive job and a life detached from our families and friends. A life dedicated to becoming the best soldier one possibly could in order to defend all we love. A life he and I shared at the same time in the same place. I loved him as a brother. I have heard that Emilie dU Chatelet, a French natural philosopher and mathematician, once said energy can neither be destroyed nor created. Though Zac is no longer with us his energy remains in all of the people who were lucky enough to have crossed paths with him. It will continue to reach out and touch us like ripples in a pond never ending and going on. Rest in peace my friend. Till Valhalla. Golden Dragon! Right of The Line!
